This is our second year of the memorial scholarship fund, created in the memory of George W. Walker (1927 - 2017) and Phil L. Mahin (1950 - 2008), two incredible educators that taught at the J. Graham Brown School in Louisville, KY. The fund was created to honor two Brown School seniors for their academic achievement, outstanding leadership in sports and as community members.

In 2019, alumni and friends successfully met the campaign goal of $2,000. Their generosity provided Maxfield Palmer and Jai'rus Bibb, our 2019 recipients, each a $1000 scholarship toward college.

About George Walker and Phil Mahin:

George, retired from Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS), and was Brown School's first basketball coach and athletic director. A beloved high school math teacher, Mr. Walker was also a member of Lampkins Chapel CME Church, Kappa Alpha PSI, Fraternity, and an Army  Veteran.

Phil, whom also retired from the JCPS school district,  organized intramural sports and club activities in the 1970's, when the school was located at the historic Brown Hotel with no gymnasium. A dedicated  health and physical education teacher, Mr. Mahin attended  Emmanuel Baptist Church, and was a member of the Black Coaches Association and the NAACP.
