Dear Friend -

Brown Paper Box Co. has been bringing Chicago audiences engaging, entertaining, and impactful productions for nearly 10 years; a huge accomplishment for a storefront theatre! As we approach a decade of work here in Chicago, we’re taking a breath, looking back where we’ve been and looking forward to what’s next.

Over the past 10 years, we’ve presented the Chicago premiere of two plays (EVERYBODY and GRACE, OR THE ART OF CLIMBING), the storefront premiere of two musicals ([title of show] and LITTLE WOMEN), and we’re currently auditioning for both the Chicago and storefront premiere of Tom Kitt and Brian York’s IF/THEN, opening in January 2020 at The Athenaeum Theatre.

Each season, we’ve been Jeff Recommended for at least one show, and two of those productions have gone on to receive Jeff nominations (Actor in a Principal Role Musical: Matt Frye, [title of show] and Actor in a Principal Role Musical: Tessa Dettman, Little Women).

We’ve been awarded grants by The MacArthur Foundation, The Saints Volunteers for Performing Arts, the Illinois Arts Council Agency, and the Dreihaus Foundation, the latter of which also supported my trip to the Theatre Communications Group (TCG) National Conference in Miami this past June.

After nearly ten years, our company has shifted and changed as we continue to grow with the theatre community here in Chicago. Throughout, the members of BPBCo. have remained kind and respectful; dedicated to challenging conversations that bring growth, knowing that we all care deeply and that we’re in this together.

We are proud of the impact BPBCo. has made in our Chicago theatre community. We’re proud that our casts and production teams find working with us a pleasant experience. And we’re proud of our team of artists, staff members, and executives, all volunteering their time and skills to make great theatre.

As we enter into our tenth season of work, I hope you’ll consider donating to help us continue to develop our company, our artistic vision, and our audience. We couldn’t do it without you and we are eternally grateful for your support.

I hope you’ll join us for our 2020/2021 season, as we continue to bring theatre, plain and simple, to Chicago audiences.

Artistic Director
