Fire Island Pines Historical Association hasn't added a story.
It began in 2010 with an idea to help to save the original name of The Blue Whale. That one idea among others evolved into the archiving the history of Fire Island Pines; Facebook became our medium to use as a way to reach out to the members of the FIP Community in an unstructured format going from “Then” to “Now”. With that we have now been able to reach out to the world to create remembrance for those who spent time in the Pines and to mentor the younger generation who are now discovering what has become a gay destination.
The support and response received to date has enabled us to learn and grow with our audience as a result of your photographic donations, as well as words shared.
Four years later, three times a day, over 4,500 posts, and almost 4,000 likes, we continue daily to bring you the “Then” and “Now” of the Pines. A passion became contagious involving others ,and that became our Board; so it grew. Our vision is big, a virtual museum of Fire Island history on the internet where you can hear music from an earlier time and enjoy a photo of an event from a more recent season.
The journey takes time. It involves meeting Community members; attending events; scanning pictures; digging deep; creating relationships; researching on the Internet; creating Community events, such as “Souvenirs 3 Decades of Classic Tea Dance” that recall an earlier time. We’ve come so far from that first thought, with your support!
As we begin our 2014 year, we stand before you with the work we’ve accomplished and find that in order to move forward we need your help in a financial capacity. What does that mean? We want to expand the concept, which is to take the existing work we’ve done to a higher level. It is a history that continues to be yours, mine and ours, and it is only with your help that this can grow.
The 2014 season planning has begun and we hope to bring you wonderful entertainment, such as the yearly “Souvenirs” event, Pines ’14 merchandise, and the Invasion Pop-Up Museum. While we will have the support of Pines Ventures, LLC on some of these events, we now ask for financial support from you, the Pines Community, going forward. Please donate what you can and know that your contribution will help us continue our efforts to create a place for people who want to remember and a place for the first-time visitor who want to know the history of the Pines.
