Our Mission at Alpha & Omega Sanctuary is to create a safe, clean, loving, self-sustained shelter for Giant Breed K-9s.
Animal shelters across the United States are overflowing with dogs of all shapes and sizes.
Virginia is no exception.
In 2019 alone:
41,282 stray K-9s were brought into custody
32,482 K-9s were surrendered by their owners
31,175 K9s were received from other releasing facilities
and sadly
8,183 K-9s were euthanized

Giant Breed K-9s are not exempt from being surrendered, abandoned, and discarded. In fact, Giant Breed K-9s tend to be the most difficult breeds to re-home despite the vast majority of Giant Breeds being incredibly friendly and affectionate with their families.
Why are Giant Breed K-9s so difficult to re-home?
- Cost is the single largest factor. Giant Breeds consume more food, veterinary costs are higher since vaccinations and medications are based on weight, and bigger (MUCH bigger) toys, beds, collars, etc. have bigger price tags
- Shorter life spans (most live 6-10 years)
- Unique (and often chronic) health problems such as arthritis, osteosarcoma, and other bone diseases, partly due to how fast they grow
In addition to creating a safe, loving, no-kill, self-sustained shelter and rescue for Giant Breed K-9s, our mission is to educate and engage with our communities about the responsibilities and care of owning and rescuing a Giant Breed K-9.

Your support is crucial to our efforts to provide homes to Giant Breed K-9s. In addition to the larger (5 run) kennel, we are in need of: veterinary care, flea and tick medication, heart worm medication, treats, collars, leashes, bowls, blankets, shampoo, general cleaning supplies for both the K-9s and their quarters, additional lighting, additional fencing, crates, and a litany of other items that will be broken down in the "needs" section of of website.
