Conisbrough Community Events hasn't added a story.
We feel that honouring Sgt. Calvert would be a fantastic and timely recognition of a very brave member of our community and be a fitting tribute to the centenary of the Great War generally.
The memorial size and construction is described below,
1. The stone we want to use will be the same type, as near as
practicable, as the war memorial to stay in keeping.
2. Base to
be constructed of stone to a height of approximately 50cm with a 60
degree slope which will hold the memorial stone with inscription.
Width will be no more than 1m by 1m. The width is largely dependent on
the wording; the more words the bigger the stone. It will not exceed
the maximum dimensions given.
3. Current suggested inscription
is 49 words and is below. We feel an engraved stone would be sufficient.
“This memorial stone was laid to commemorate the centenary of
the end of the Great War, and in honour of Sergeant Laurence Calvert
VC MM, 5th Battalion, K.O.Y.L.I.
For his actions on 12 September
1918, in France at the Battle of Havrincourt, he was awarded the VC
for his valour”
Full details about Laurence Calvert can be found on the Conisbrough
& Denaby History website, link below. But briefly, he was born in
Hunslet, Leeds and moved to Conisbrough in 1910 where he worked as a
miner at Cadeby Colliery. He moved to Maltby Colliery for a short
spell and when the great disaster happened at Cadeby in 1912 he
presented himself at the colliery gate to enlist as a rescue worker.
He moved back to Cadeby Colliery soon after and continued to live in
Conisbrough till he enlisted in the Army and was shipped to France in
1915. He won the VC at Havrincourt on the 12th September 1918.
His brother Walter, who was a miner at Yorkshire Main Colliery
wrote this about him shortly after the war, “It is hoped and believed
that some special effort will be made in Conisbrough and at the
Colliery where Sgt Calvert was employed, to mark the local sense of
the honour which the heroic sergeant has again, and has conferred on
the place of his adoption, Conisbrough, an ancient village which was
already entitled to be known in history, and is now able to associate
with the great European war. The fact that it (Conisbrough) sent many
men that are good enough to win the VC and one who actually got it”
Sgt Calvert's medals
In short, honouring Sgt. Calvert is way over due. In Hunslet he
has a school named after him, in Conisbrough there’s nothing, not even
a side street on a new build estate.

About Us
Conisbrough Community Events are a local group who amongst other things, were responsible for the Poppies at the Castle events. We also contributed toward the replacement of the Conisbrough War Memorial bayonet.
We have the support of our local Councillors, Doncaster Council, the Calvert family and the local branch of the Royal British Legion.
We have managed to secure half the funding from Dearne Valley Landscape Partnership for this project. We need a further £2,000.00 to make it happen. Contributions raised from this crowd funder will not only go towards the construction of the memorial, they will also help to pay the yearly insurance policy and other expenses.
Who's helped us so far.....
We'd like to thank Steve Arrowsuch from Historic Building Restoration Ltd for agreeing to do the stonework, and Craig Wordsworth from Construction & Plant Assessments for doing the footings.
