TO CELEBRATE YUGNTRUF’S 60TH ANNIVERSARY THIS YEAR, WE ARE RAISING $60,000! AS OF DECEMBER 26TH, 2024, we've raised $50,000 but need your help to raise that final $10,000!
SIXTY YEARS AGO – in March 1964 – 16-year-old David Roskies wrote fellow student Gabi Trunk to propose creating a Yiddish language magazine that would unite Yiddish-speaking youth around the world. They would call it “Yugntruf” – “call to youth.” By that August, more than 50 young Yiddish speakers, under the guidance of Dr. Mordkhe Schaechter, gathered in NYC to officially launch Yugntruf - Youth for Yiddish.
OVER THE PAST SIX DECADES, Yugntruf - Youth for Yiddish has galvanized the rejuvenation of Yiddish among youth worldwide, and has built a culture of speaking in Yiddish, not just about Yiddish through our innovative programs:
- Yugntruf’s “Yidish-vokh” (Yiddish Week), our 49th annual total-immersion Yiddish-language retreat, was sold out this summer, with 150 young people, families, and seniors from around the world traveling to the beautiful NY Berkshires to enjoy our workshops, classes, and summer camp fun – all in Yiddish!
- Our Yugntruf Digital Archive (yugntruf.org/zhurnal) preserves – in an online searchable format – more than 40 years of original Yiddish poetry, stories, and commentary from 104 issues of the “Yugntruf” journal.
- Kinder-Loshn Publications (www.kinderloshn.org) brings to the youngest generation our beautifully-illustrated Yiddish/English children’s books, like Solomon Simon’s “Dos Kluge Shnayderl” (The Clever Little Tailor) and Jenny Kjærbo's “Gevald!” (Uh Oh!), with Esther Himelstein’s “Dos Alte Shpil-Kestele” (The Old Toy Chest) and other delightful books to come!
- “Farbreng!” (“Hang Out!”), Yugntruf’s national initiative is fostering groups of young Yiddish-speakers in Chicago and Boston as they sponsor local activities in Yiddish – cafe hangouts, museum visits, and more – that further the everyday use of mame-loshn.
SO PLEASE MAKE A TAX-DEDUCTIBLE DONATION TODAY TO YUGNTRUF! Help us sustain Yugntruf's innovative programs so we can continue spreading Yiddish worldwide – for the NEXT 60 years!
IF YOU GIVE $100 OR MORE, you’ll receive these tokens of our thanks:
