On the morning of Tuesday, June 23, Steve passed away after complications from cancer. He was a devoted husband, friend, and a passionate advocate for the disc golf community that meant so much to him.
When speaking with his wife, Katarina, and his family about how they would like to honour Steve's memory, they shared that Steve would have wanted any donations to give back to the disc golf community.
Steve was an active and respected member of the disc golf community and was always building lasting friendships with players of every skill level and from all clubs. Whether he was introducing someone to the sport, competing in a tournament, or simply enjoying a casual round, Steve made people feel welcome.
As a competitor, Steve played in countless tournaments and consistently performed at a high level, regularly finishing in the cash and maintaining an impressive player rating for many years. He loved the challenge of competitive disc golf and the opportunity it gave him to push himself, always striving to play his best.
He also believed in giving back to the game he loved. For nearly a decade, he served as Treasurer of the provincial disc golf board, helping support and grow the sport throughout British Columbia.
In 2016, Steve was part of the dedicated group that helped spearhead the installation of sleeves for a temporary course in the Arboretum at Queen Elizabeth Park, alongside the existing disc golf course. That course played an important role when Canada hosted the PDGA Team World Championships later that year.
On July 13 of this year, the Vancouver Parks Board unanimously approved the installation of a permanent course in the Arboretum. This new course will stand as part of Steve's lasting legacy.
To honour his memory, we are raising funds for one of the greatest tributes a disc golfer can receive: a bench bearing Stevie's name on the new course, where players can pause, reflect, and remember the person who helped make it possible.
Any additional funds raised will be dedicated to supporting the continued growth of disc golf through player development and infrastructure initiatives, helping ensure that Steve's passion for the sport continues to benefit the community for years to come.
Thanks for helping us celebrate his life, his generosity, and the lasting impact he made on the sport and the people who shared it with him. Stevie's imprint on all of us is unforgettable, and we know that his vibrant energy, joviality, goodness, and love of others will be carried forward by all of us.
