SJR needs your help and we’re reaching out to our community for support in restoring our on-campus habitat and outdoor classroom. The space will feature native plants, an outdoor classroom, open space and pond to serve as a habitat for nine turtles and a pair of frogs as well as the birds who nest in the trees.
Our boys are doing their part, clearing space and leveling the ground for drainage purposes. They are installing a vegetable garden as well as more native plants to attract butterflies and serve local birds. The space has previously been designated a Certified Audubon Garden by the Bergen County Audubon Society.
To tie the space to the student experience, our goal is to create a centerpiece 11’ x 16’ pond with shallow shelves and numerous rocks. With your support, it will serve not only as a home for the animals, but also a living lab for our students. They will conduct water tests for chemistry, use the classroom when the weather cooperates and track and identify birds as part of Cornell University’s FeederWatch program.
These new features allow for a more engaging opportunity for the students to observe living science. Making connections between what is learned in a textbook and actually observing the cross-cutting concepts, patterns and interactions in a native habitat increases student understanding and appreciation of our natural world.
We are asking for donations in any amount. Every donation will help us achieve our goal to complete the restoration this spring. We are thankful and most appreciative for any assistance that is given to help our cause.
