RAISING $50,000+ FOR HENRY'S JOURNEY and RECRUITING CYCLISTS FOR JUNE 22ND
Henry Black is Shannon McKinnon’s and Gary Black’s 16-year-old son, and he was involved in a bicycle accident here in Toronto on June 25, 2024. He hit a tree while riding downhill with a friend. No automobile was involved. As a result of this accident, Henry is quadriplegic and has been living either at Sick Kid's Hospital or Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital ever since. Henry has complex medical needs and has suffered many setbacks along the way. However, he suffered no brain injury—thanks to his helmet, and thank god—and is fully aware of his situation and what the future holds for him. Nevertheless, his beautiful personality shines through. Shannon refers to him as “magical" and "inspiring”.
Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital and staff have provided Henry with incredible care and support, and will be helping promote this fundraiser. In order for Henry to eventually leave rehab, (which is expected to occur in the summer or fall of 2025, barring any further medical complications), Shannon, along with Henry’s father and stepmom (Gary Black and Lianna Paron) will need to safely and comfortably house Henry. This will require relocations and renovations that will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
To help Henry and his family with these expenses, a fundraiser bike ride (25-100kms options) will be taking place just north of Toronto on June 22, 2025. 75% of funds raised will go Henry's family and the remaining 25% will be donated to Holland Bloorview (tax receipts for this portion will be available).
