Meet Ashley Pattammady, an Nvolve alumna.
Ashley's journey as a first-generation college student demonstrates
the power of passion, pursuit of knowledge, and resilience. Join us in
celebrating Ashley's experience with Nvolve.
"Pursuing my personal interest in drug development and data
analysis, I graduated from the University of Maryland, in May 2023
with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and minor in Chemistry. From
interning at the John Hopkins University Applied Research Lab to
being admitted to graduate school to pursue a Master of Public
Health in Biostatistics, I am excited to continue achieving my goals.
A first gen STEM college student, I joined Nvolve in August 2021 to engage in innovative research projects, professional mentoring, and networking. Through Nvolve’s Science and Technology Program, I participated in multiple challenging projects, including researching current novel breast cancer biomarkers and creating a data visualization dashboard using the World Health Organization’s air pollution data. I was also part of the core project team that built a mental health mobile app. It is undeniable that these experiences made me more confident and ambitious to pursue new projects.
I also learned from Nvolve’s weekly huddles on career development, leadership, and critical thinking. I enjoyed hearing about my fellow scholars’ perspectives and the lessons they learned along their STEM journeys. N ot only did Nvolve enhance my research, communication, and technical skills but it opened the door to an amazing community of inspiring women in STEM. For two years, my Nvolve mentor supported me with mentoring that positively shaped my career goals. She provided me with one-on-one advice to help prepare for interviews, internships, and graduate school applications. Words cannot express the amount of gratitude I have for her encouragement and guidance.
As an Nvolve alumna, I remind my fellow scholars and women in
STEM to stay curious and never let anyone stop you from reaching
your full potential!

Women are underrepresented in STEM jobs. Data from the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey shows that:
- Women comprise 48% of all US workers but only 25% of STEM workers.
- At least 20% of women with STEM degrees do not participate in the STEM workforce.
- Women are underrepresented among degree recipients at all degree levels in physical and earth sciences, mathematics and computer sciences, and engineering.
- he STEM attrition problem is even more severe when considering racial, ethnic, and socio-economic barriers.
College women in STEM from underrepresented backgrounds would be served by having access to STEM-practicing mentors, developing professional skills required for success in the real world, joining cohort-based STEM communities, and building a network of STEM advocates. The unmet needs also include having access to a supportive environment that allows students to be fully engaged; to practice innovation; and to participate in group projects that mimic real-world work.
Founded in 2020, Nvolve is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, dedicated to increasing the participation of college women in technology, engineering, life sciences, and health careers by overcoming gender, racial and socioeconomic barriers. (www.NvolveMe.org)
In collaboration with academic and industry partners, Nvolve uses unique approaches to mentoring, professional skill-building and experiential learning to prepare college women for successful STEM careers. Our program engages STEM students throughout the academic year --- providing them with a window into the real-world ways of working.
We are proud to be a fully volunteer-led organization and 100% of the tax-deductible donations from this campaign will be dedicated to student stipends.
Nvolve's impact to date:
- 77 full-time STEM college students from 11 colleges/universities
- 100+ volunteers from various industries and academia
- 67% first generation college students
- 87% first generation-STEM college students
- 60% students of color
- 93% with community college start (all advancing to 4-year universities)
- 1250+ mentoring hours by STEM practicing professional women (Twice monthly throughout the academic year)
- 285+ workshops and group discussions focusing on cultivating leadership and communication skills
- 62 analytics, technical and science projects
- 140+ awarded scholarships and stipends
