Emergency Response Mount Merapi

Since June 1st 2018, Mt. Merapi - the most active volcano in Indonesia, erupted for the third times since 2006, and volcanic materials along with pyroclastics for about 6,000 meters. Although most of the villages are well aware and already evacuating themselves properly - learning from past experience, no one able to make sure for how long they have to evacuate.

There are at least 50 families evacuating in this shelter including children, pregnant mothers, and elderlies in need of support. Facilities are provided by the government but evacuees are in need of basic life support (i.e food, sanitary equipment, clean underwear, medicines and ointments, etc)

IDEP is helping to support the preparedness and wellbeing by providing a range of supports, including Family Buckets.

IDEP distributing Family Bucket for Mt. Agung volcanic eruption evacuee in 2017

What’s a Family Bucket?

The buckets are multi-functional; they deliver basic needs and sustain a family for 2 weeks (with nutritious food, coffee, pantry essentials, sleeping mattresses, sanitary products, traditional medicine, blankets and children’s activity kits), it can also keep drinking water safe from volcanic ash or store what little valuables they may have brought with them.  USD $115 buys 1 Family Bucket.

Family Buckets are highly effective  and efficient. The model was proven in Aceh after the Tsunami in 2004, and Mt.Agung volcanic eruption in 2017. Family buckets are one plank in a raft of strategies that IDEP has deployed to support evacuees. IDEP is also partnering up to leverage support for:

  • Evacuation Camp Supplies  – resources especially supporting elderly and toddlers, camp-sized mattresses, water filtration systems, ash masks and DRR Resources for Camp Managers - worth  US $750 / camp.

You can help in the following ways:
