Hello Madear’s Family,
We need to share something with you that’s really hard for us to have to do. We messed up and it’s a pretty big mess up. We’ve been asking ourselves how did this happen like this? So we’re going to share the story, answer some questions that we know you will have, and let you know what we need to be able to move forward. Accountability and ownership over where Madear’s currently stands is important to our family and in line with our values. So, here goes.
First of all, we want to make it clear to everyone that we left Manchester (although we didn’t want to) not because of our initial financial accounting problems, but because we needed more space to grow, additional parking, greater main street visibility, better accessibility for people of different abilities, and also better positioning between Manchester and Concord.
Now that that is out of the way, you know that we are a small, family business and unfortunately, there is no one person in charge of the financial accounting. We thought we could handle it in-house, but in light of recent events, we fully understand our limitations and we will be hiring an accountant that has restaurant experience in New Hampshire. We've also brought on a lawyer to communicate with the state on our behalf. Prior we relied on family members helping out. There were too many cooks in the kitchen and a lack of communication. Not working with a professional accountant has led us to where we are now in debt to the New Hampshire Dept. of Revenue.
We own this mess up, and in the spirit of complete transparency, we had the same problem before but not to the extent we do now. We thought we had it figured out, but we didn’t, and that is why we are currently closed and reaching out for support from those who are able to help.
We have brought in experts to communicate with the agencies and we are in the market now for an experienced bookkeeper/accountant who has worked with other restaurants. Know anyone? We’re hiring!
We signed our lease for the new space 1 month before the global pandemic hit and we never took a PPP loan. Looking back, it would have been a smart thing to do and having an accountant would have helped with that. We have made mistakes and now we are dealing with the consequences of them.
So now what does Madear’s mean to you?
Talking to our close friends and family, we’ve really come to understand the impact that Madear’s has on many people’s lives because we aren’t “just another restaurant”. People have shared with us that our space is a Community Space - some even call it “Queer Cheers” - but most importantly Madear’s is a safe space. It’s a place where you can be out and proud or be still figuring things out. We welcome people from all walks of life, in all types of relationships, living all types of lifestyles, and we are a place where you start out as strangers but become family.
We work hard to do a lot for people and places all over New Hampshire from Queen City Pride to Juneteenth to Madear’s Events like Drag Brunch and Comedy Shows, as well as supporting emerging artists and standing firmly behind One Fair Wage.
The reality is that in order to keep Madear’s going, we have to take care of this financial accounting problem and ensure it never, ever happens again. We know what we need to do, but we need your support now more than ever.
Our financial goal is to raise 70k in funds.
These funds will be our first step in correcting this:
- Our first step in correcting this has been to obtain a lawyer to help us deal and communicate with the state Department of Revenue.
- The next step is to vent and hire a trustworthy and knowledgeable CPA that has New Hampshire hands on restaurant experience.
- The third step may be tough but not impossible. We are asking for help to raise the funds needed to re-open the restaurant by paying the State, renewing our liquor license, and doing a few necessary improvements. We have reached out to Community Loan Funds prior to the closing and will continue to try to work with them.
What are these improvements?
- We are looking to open with increased revenue by adding several ghost kitchens to our services. We also will be streamlining our own menu to help with staffing needs.
- We want to add several pieces of equipment that will ultimately make us more competitive, efficient and add to our revenue. This includes a convection oven, full size frozen daiquiri machine, a beer cooler, draft system, and refrigerated bakery storage and displays.
We are asking that everyone share and ask others that can donate to support. We are also putting together a silent auction event and asking for donation items to auction off for the event. We will send you updates on our progress! Thank you so much for your love and support, we hope to see you soon back in the restaurant.
Glitter Rainbow Hugs -
