Fueling a Radical Ecology of Care
Mutual Aid Wildlife Rehabilitation (MAWR) Center takes a radically different approach to climate action. We don’t just conserve wildlife—we confront the colonial and exclusionary systems that shaped our ecological crisis in the first place. In our community, that means addressing biodiversity loss and transforming how people understand their power as climate actors. Through our programs, neighbors learn to see themselves as part of an ecosystem, inseparable from their more-than-human kin and as part of a crucial movement shift.
We understand your inboxes are busy with support requests at this time of year and we thank you for being willing to read one more (and be updated on our successes this year).
Our Wild/Neighbors Program fills a critical gap. We pair wildlife rehabilitation with intersectional, justice-centered education that builds ecological literacy, empathy, and belonging. Our workshops center the voices and experiences of marginalized communities, revealing the deep connections between environmental and social justice—and making it clear that caring for the land and caring for each other are the same act.
You can see the impact. When a family returns to release turtle hatchlings we incubated after their mother was killed on her way to lay them, two generations of two species experience what reciprocal care looks like. After our talks at community centers and libraries, participants leave committed to centering BIPOC and Queer perspectives in environmental narratives. At Camp Fruit Fly, youth discover that ecological care is social care—that both are forms of kinship.
This year alone, we reached more than 200 people through programs championing kinship, reciprocity, and queer ecologies. We completed three pre-release enclosures and moved into our building, more than doubling our rehabilitation capacity. We launched our volunteer program. And now we’re asking: would you like to join us?
To keep our programs free and accessible, we must raise $10,000 annually. In a political climate that often demands our silence, your end-of-year gift does more than sustain our work—it amplifies our collective voice and feeds a more inclusive, truthful environmental movement.
