Bringing electricity to a Vocational center in Kalobeyei refugee settlement.
At Energy For Refugees we fight for a world where electricity is accessible for everyone. Each year, a group of TU Delft master students selects, designs, engineers & raises funds for a solar-powered installation. In this year's project, we will work with KI4BLI a Refugee-Led Organization based in Kakuma-Kalobeyei, Kenya, that provides livelihood and education programs in the community.
Currently, Ki4bli has a vocational center where refugees are taught digital skills such as coding and marketing so that they can work as freelancers from inside the camp through a Fiver profile. However, the current electricity supply is expensive, unreliable, and not enough to expand the center´s capacity.
Kakuma means "Nowhere" in Kiswahili and is a place with harsh conditions, droughts, extreme heat, lack of resources, and undeveloped economies, with an unemployment rate of 80% and an average daily income of less than 1 USD per day (World development, 2024). Situation which will get worse due to the defunding of USAID, your support has never been more urgent!
The reason why projects like this vocational center are of such importance as it brings money, fulfillment, and opportunities to the local community. Making "Nowhere" feel like home for some of the 300,000 refugees living there.
With your help, we will be able to provide Ki4bli with a solar panel system with integrated invertors and batteries, which will provide green, constant and free electricity to allow them expand their reach and use their resources in more impactful ways. All donations go directly to the project. As students, we are volunteering our time and covering our own travel costs (including flights) to ensure that every euro you give supports the installation and empowers the community.
