Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement hasn't added a story.
An ancient myth in the Lakota Sioux tradition describes a huge black snake that will come to threaten the life of the people. That threat is happening now.
In North Dakota, courageous warriors – men and women, children and elders of many unified tribal groups - are valiantly standing in the path of the Dakota Access Pipeline. Many are being arrested and even sued by the corporation that is threatening their water and sacred cultural sites, violating treaties and disregarding their way of life and the future of their people.
That same black snake also threatens Iowa’s waters and soil – all for the profit of Big Oil. Illegitimate use of eminent domain is stealing land from Iowa farmers and landowner and running roughshod over property, blatantly ignoring the legally required construction methods.
We know that all Iowans bear the risk of this bad deal. Pipelines spill and leak. It's not a matter of if, but when.
In the Sioux language a “warrior” is a defender and protector. We stand in solidarity with our Native brothers and sisters, who have bravely faced law enforcement and corporate harassment at the Missouri River crossing in North Dakota.
Please contribute today to the #NOBakken Pipeline Legal Defense Fund to support Iowa's “warriors” risking arrest by actively blocking the Dakota Access/Bakken pipeline construction.
For two years a broad coalition of Iowans have resisted in creative and courageous ways. Lawsuits are still in the courts. We still hold out hope that President Obama will use his authority to reject the Bakken pipeline -- just as he did with the Keystone pipeline. But we can't wait for court rulings or President Obama while construction is underway.
NOW is when we need to stand with our tribal allies, with landowners, with land and water itself, and risk arrest to stop completion of construction of the pipeline before it's too late.
Iowa’s warrior-protectors are your neighbors: farmers, landowners, grannies, students, mothers, uncles, businesspeople, shopkeepers, and professionals. Like Cynde Capolla and her family and neighbors below.
Iowa's pipeline fighters care about the same things you do - about our water, our environment, our health and the legacy we're leaving our kids and grandkids.
We also know this - people can stop pipelines! They are being rejected and shut down. This is possible!
Hundreds have signed the Pledge of Resistance, to stand up, risk arrest, hold the line, block construction, and prevent this unprecedented threat to our land and water. This requires nonviolent direct action by those who are able, and from many others, lots of support - emotional, logistical and financial.
Contribute today. Be generous.
Be a part of this local and national movement to halt the Bakken in its tracks, to put people and planet before corporate profits. Not everyone can put their bodies on the line, but everyone can support those who do. No amount too small or too large.
*This fund will support those being arrested in defense of our
land, water and property rights. Decisions on how the money will be
allocated will be made jointly by a
coalition of organizations (Iowa CCI, Bold Iowa, 100 Grannies
for a Liveable Future) working to stop the Dakota Access pipeline
in Iowa.
