When seniors Micaela Leon Perdomo, Eva Beram, and Clara Barry reflected on their time in the arts at CRLS, they realized they wanted something more: a final, culminating arts event that would celebrate all they’ve learned in their four years at the high school. More than that, though, they wanted to produce a show that would reflect who they are, as students in an urban high school in 2018, as young women in the #MeToo era, and as performers finding their voices. Together, they became The Medusa Coalition.
The trio of student producers was joined by Kathryn Rosenberg, former
theater and finance
professional, who volunteered to serve as
co-producer for the project. Together, the four have collaborated to
articulate and define the project: a fully-staged production of
HEATHERS: THE MUSICAL, to be performed for the public in the spring of
2019, just before the CRLS class of 2019 graduates.
HEATHERS: THE MUSICAL is based on the 1988 film of the same title. It tells the story of Veronica, a bright and unpopular senior in high school who happens to fall in the good graces of The Heathers, the most popular (and meanest) girls in school. When Veronica starts dating with JD, the misfit new boy at school, she thinks she just might make it through high school. But then, when Veronica has to choose between popularity and kindness, between revenge and honor, between belonging and independence, she finds things are more complicated and scarier than she’d ever imagined possible. Ultimately, she learns, “We’re all damaged / We’re all frightened / We’re all freaks / But that’s all right. / We’ll endure it / We’ll survive it.” The darkly comic musical is, despite its macabre premise, uplifting and empowering, showcasing the resilience and strength of these high school students.
