This fundraising project is based on the foundation of women's empowerment and that no matter what your internal or physical struggles may be, Fitness 1440 Mount Juliet, can help you reach your goals, be it a physical, mental or emotional transformation. They believe in giving back to the community, supporting you on your mission and making a difference in this world. In partnership with them, together, we are excited to reach and hopefully surpass our fundraising goal of $1,000 for the Hope Clinic of Women Nashville.
Established in 1983, Hope Clinic for Women is a faith-based safe and confidential place equipping women, men and families dealing with: unplanned pregnancies, access to women's healthcare, prevention education, pregnancy loss and postpartum depression. They provide medical care, professional counseling, education classes, case management, mentor-ship and practical support regardless of age, race, religion or ability to pay.
My name is Dana May and I was diagnosed with Endometriosis (a common reproductive system disorder) in 2014. I had laparoscopic surgery to correctly diagnose my stage level and to remove tissue that can cause severe pain, organs to bind together and damage to organ function. I have endometriosis adhesion's in my peritoneum, spaces between my rectum and uterus and ureteral endometriosis. Ablation burns off these adhesion's but eventually regrow so I require surgery when my pain begins to worsen and becomes intolerable. At times I suffer from severe pain, flare ups that last for several days, chronic fatigue, anxiety, depression and overall body pain.
There is no cure but Endometriosis can be managed with surgery, medication, specific nutrition and alternative healthcare practices. Follow our campaign to help educate yourself on this disorder because a family member or friend may be suffering in silence. The stigma of not talking about period and reproductive health has found a new revolution. Let's talk period's!
What is Endometriosis:
It occurs when tissue similar to the endometrium (the lining of the uterus) is found outside the uterus on other parts of the body. It affects girls and women during their most productive years, and can impact all aspects of their lives – school, careers, finances, relationships, and overall well being. Generally, endometriosis is found in the pelvic cavity. It can attach to any of the female reproductive organs (uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries), the uterosacral ligaments, the peritoneum, or any of the spaces between the bladder, uterus/vagina, and rectum. Endometriosis can also be found, though less commonly, on the bladder, bowel, intestines, appendix or rectum.
Endometriosis Statistics:
- Only 20% of the general public have heard of endometriosis
- It effects 1 in 10 women of reproductive age (from age 10-50)
- It effects 176 million people worldwide
- 80% miss work due to pain from endometriosis related symptoms
- 33% of women were told that their symptoms were only in their head
- On average women visit 10 doctor's before they are properly diagnosed
- Is not rare and is the second most common gynecological condition
- 32% of women suffer from depression affected by endometriosis
- 45% effected say it has affected relationships with friends and family
- Annual direct healthcare costs of endometriosis are substantial, amounting to $2801 per patient
I can personally attest to the devastating effects this disease can have on a person, and only wish more information had been available when I was trying to find answers. We have a need in our communities to educate everyone because someone you know may be suffering and not know that they have Endometriosis.
