East Bali Poverty Project (EBPP) is assisting hundreds of families affected by the Lombok earthquake in a large east Bali mountain village where the updated figures show No. of homes completely destroyed is 133 and another 300+ badly damaged

What is our cause?

To provide emergency response and assistance to 12 of the 19 communities in Ban village, Karangasem, East Bali whose houses have been totally destroyed or seriously damaged by the 7.0 Richter scale earthquake that struck off the Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara coast on 5th August 2018, followed by 6.2 Richter scale on 10th August, 6.5 and 7.0 Richter scale on 19th August.

Located approximately 200km from the earthquake epicentre, all Ban village’s 19 communities, that live high on the slopes of Mount Agung and Mount Abang, have been supported by the East Bali Poverty Project (EBPP) since 1998,  need our help now to provide safe shelter, especially for their young children, mothers, the elderly and disabled.

By 3 September 2018, due to their remote locations, some of the community just reported to the village leader about their house conditions that now bring the number of completely destroyed homes to133 with another 300+ moderately to seriously damaged and these people are in urgent need of help. Upon seeing this, EBPP needs to prolong this fundraising campaign so as to be able to have sufficient funds to support those most in need, up to the most remote corner of the village. This earthquake follows behind the 2017-2018 eruptions of Mount Agung, which caused shocking losses for the people’s livelihoods, and they are still struggling to recover - and now this devastating earthquake that has left many homeless and destroyed many places of worship in several Ban village hamlets.

What is the current condition in our village?

Due to destroyed or damaged homes after the earthquake, hundreds of the families are too scared to go back home. Numerous families are currently sleeping across the street and farm-yard with tarp above their heads. EBPP aims to provide an emergency response to this community by building a temporary settlement to shield them from any possible danger.

How do we plan to help them?

We plan to provide all of the materials and technical support for them to build bamboo framed houses with concrete floors, zinc roofs and walls cladded with tarpaulin, as temporary shelters until the government can provide the resources for permanent houses. Each 3 x 5 meter house can shelter 1 family (6-7 people) and we will give priority to families whose homes were totally destroyed. We will also provide basic necessities including mattresses, pillows, bed linen, floor mats, etc.

The cost of each home is US $275 . What do the communities provide? Bamboo and labor

We need your help to build these shelters!
