Cubby takes place on the lands of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nations. This land was stolen. Sovereignty has never been ceded. We pay our respects to elders past present and emerging. There are many ways to support First Nations communities and land back initiatives across the globe. Learn more about whose land you are on, and grow from there! There is no pride in genocide! In the year of 2019, a portal was opened when an artist in Naarm used the excuse of their birthday to flip their apartment into a gallery space and connect members of the community to one another with art as the centrepiece. With the help of fellow artist friends, fam and flirts, CUBBY was born! 

There were 3 speakeasy arts showcases where houses were transformed in this way. We got together and shared poetry, paintings, sculpture, dance, drawings, prints and open jam sessions among other things! We had the blessing of a grass roots gallery space opening their arms to us and enabling us to have a 2 week public exhibition, Spoken Word and Open Mic, as well as an Autonomous Artists’ Market. 

As the story goes with Covid-19 and social distancing, we reimagined possibilities so that we could keep this portal open and swirling. We decided that an arts publication would be a good way to generate financial support for the artists involved in CUBBY and to share stories and creations in physical and digital form. 

So what exactly is CUBBY?

We are an arts collective that celebrates the foiine arts and the beautiful people who create it! We call it CUBBY because art is the playground of our child and adult selves. When curating a Cubby Session, we smoosh as much art into small boxes as possible and…. party!!!   CUBBY is a sensory-friendly, accessible space for people to engage with art and sound. We are multidisciplinary, multicultural and multilingual. We were founded by members of the nuero-emergent, streets rising, trans and queer community. 

What will be in the CUBBY Session 4 publication?

Inside Session 4, you can expect to see poetry, paintings, collage art,  photography and more. We'll be sharing art from established and emerging artists from around the globe. You can look forward to viewing the creations of hat makers, metal smiths, food creators, fashion designers, meme makers and beyond!
