We started Alchemy in 2018 because we know that art is important. Not just for culture, self-expression, and joy; but also for healing, relaxation, and connecting people to causes they care about. Art is an outlet. A place to get perspective and have new experiences. A place to be yourself.
We don’t just like art, we need art. Young and old, professional artists and experimenters, kids and retired folks, people from all financial backgrounds, of all abilities. We grow when we can explore, when we can see things in a new way. More and more, local mental health providers reach out to us to create opportunities for people to heal and find release. As the only community arts center on San Juan Island, we take our role seriously and are so thankful for your trust in us to provide this critical community service.
And we still need your help. Donations from people like you allow us to be flexible and quickly respond to what our community needs, not just what restricted funding will pay for. Donations, along with grants and program income, are an incredibly important part of what we do. I’ve made this bread once a week for a year and it’s perfect for sandwiches or toast and freezes beautifully. The flavor is mild and sweet with all the sourdough benefits because it rises in one long afternoon rather than overnight in the fridge. I’m happy to include the recipe and a jar of sourdough starter if you are particularly ambitious and want to start on your own sourdough journey.

Help Alchemy provide 1-1 tutoring for young island artists. Our Mentorship program identifies children and youth that exhibit creative talent and are in need of special tutoring for a variety of reasons. We connect professional artists with young people who will benefit from art the most, right here in our studio, free of charge.
Our talented board chair, John Bellows, is a Singer/ Songwriter on the island. For the first time, he is offering the gift of his creativity to write a personal song about your dream. Our most mysterious offering... what will happen?
