How can a $10.00 injection save a life?

An adrenal crisis is a life threatening event that can lead to disabilty or death.  Someone with Adrenal Insufficiency doesn't make enough Cortisol to sustain life.  They must take daily replacement glucocorticoids such as Hydrocortisone.  Many, about 75%, also lack Aldosterone and must take additional replacement medications. 

In times of illness and/or injury, those with Adrenal Insufficiency need an immediate extra dose of Hydrocortisone or risk an adrenal crisis.  This dose comes in the form of an injection, or if they are at the hospital, an IV.  Sadly few EMS agencies or ER emergency rooms have protocols that include treatment for those with Adrenal Insufficiency.  A protocol is a system of rules that determine what and how a recognized medical condition can be treated.  Without protocols for adrenal insufficiency, many suffer more pain while waiting for treatment, others have become permanently disabled.  Tragically, some have died.

Over 60 conditions and/or their treatments can lead to adrenal insufficiency in people of all ages and ethnic origins.  Cancer, long term steriod use, asthma, Addisons, CAH, POMC, Cushigns, and ALD are just a few.

Adrenal Insufficiency United (AIU) has been raising awareness within the Emergency Services Community by attending conferences and events.  We mail free emergency information kits to EMS & ER personnel as well as school nurses.  We've also been reaching out to those affected by Adrenal Insufficiency through mailings to endocrinologists.  These mailings include patient information for endos to hand out and provide much needed resources to those who may be newly diagnosed or those who have been suffering alone.
