Westie Hit By A Truck Two Days Ago Needs Immediate Help
When we received this phone call it sent a jolt of urgency through us. This heartbreaking incident occurred at a busy factory where there's a constant flow of lorries carrying steel girders and heavy rolls. It was the observant security guard who spotted the young puppy dragging itself around and swiftly contacted us.
100 km journey for X-rays and admission
Our team found him nestled beneath a tree. We gently wrapped him in a comforting blanket and carefully carried him to the car and rushed to our vet. His pain was evident. Our initial fears were confirmed: a broken back leg, with swelling that suggested internal bleeding. Lacking on-site x-ray facilities, we were faced with a 100-kilometre journey to our specialist vet who could provide the necessary x-rays and perform the crucial operation.
Westie's
right upper femur bone was shattered into 4 pieces. The large
swelling in his groin is due to his intestines being ripped out of
his stomach. If left for a few more days he would have died from
blood poisoning (septicemia). If that wasn't enough to endure he
tested for 2 types of blood parasites and he was extremely anaemic.
Steel pin replaces shattered bone
Westie was admitted immediately and scheduled for an operation the next day but the vet waited 2 days to build up Westie's strength. We were concerned about his weak condition and were overjoyed to receive a message saying; "Our courageous Westie's vital operation had been successful". His little body, found just days ago beneath a tree, endured a significant procedure to repair his severely broken upper femur. Imagine his upper femur bone shattered into four pieces – now held together by a steel pin, leaving Westie with a large operation wound with 21 stitches and staples.
Westie faced this ordeal with incredible bravery, not even a whimper. The poor long suffering puppy had to sleep on a hard steel slatted floor to keep his pen clean. The vet explained that introducing anything that could harbour infection, such as rugs and pee pads especially if he were to urinate on them, would be detrimental to his recovery.
Massive internal injuries
Following his second surgery to reposition his intestines, the vet discovered further damage to Westie's urinary tract and bladder. To protect his internal organs and aid healing, they inserted Polyplastic sheets. While we're relieved that he's eating, he's currently experiencing difficulty urinating.
Shattered hip
Adding to his challenges, whilst operating the surgeon saw that Westie's right hip was shattered – an injury that wasn't apparent on the initial x-ray, which focused on his leg. This will likely necessitate another surgery.
Westie's strength is inspiring. His horrific ordeal shows us not
only his resilience but also the profound impact of compassion. He's
a very brave young dog, coping so well with his wounds and all the
hardship that it brings. Westie’s journey to recovery is far from
over. His stay at the clinic will likely extend for several more
weeks, significantly increasing his already substantial operation
costs, now estimated to exceed 35,000 Baht, £800, or $1,000.
Your kindness would be deeply appreciated
We are extremely grateful to our generous supporters who've already donated to help us pay for Westie's operation and aftercare. Westie has suffered excruciating pain, far too much for a young wild puppy to bear. We hope you, are moved by his story and able to contribute even a small amount towards his expensive operation costs, we would be eternally grateful.
Your kindness will make a tangible difference to Westie’s chances. Every donation brings us one step closer to seeing this brave little soul recover and thrive.
