In 2009 after searching high and low for a small rescue dog in my hometown of Vancouver, BC I was drawn to a post about an emaciated, disabled Chihuahua/Terrier available for adoption at a rescue organization in Portland Oregon.
Within minutes of arriving to meet this very skinny, funny looking , exuberant dog I knew my life had changed for the better. What I learned (and had never heard of or seen before) about was the horrific state of discarded dogs in the USA. After spending some time with the exhausted woman running the rescue group "UNDERDOGZ RESCUE" (no longer in existence) I knew I had to educate myself and do something - anything!!
From that day on, under the direction of this amazing little dog, my life's purpose became "Homer's Legacy" and Thank DOG I Am Out Dog Rescue Society was created - a Canadian Registered Not for Profit Society whose mandate is to save as many discarded dogs as possible locally, and internationally, and to educate humans about the desperate need to #AdoptDontShop.
Our goal is to try to make this world a better place - "One dog at a time" .
Now , 15 years later with over 2,000 dogs rescued and re homed - the "OG" rescue dog " Homer" has died at the very ripe age of 18 years old.
It is now time to honour this mighty little terrier.
In honour of Homer , Thank DOG I Am Out Dog Rescue Society has decided to step in and help as many of the discarded dogs wandering the abandoned orchards and oil fields in the dreaded area of Bakersfield, California.
All donations received from this moment on until the Bakersfield dogs arrive into Vancouver on Saturday April 20th will determine the number of dogs we can save on this mission.
