Lucas County Children Services (LCCS) and its nonprofit partner Friends of LCCS are working to renovate and replace a 25-year old playground area where supervised visits occur between children and their parents as they work toward reunification. This space is a crucial outdoor area for parent-child interaction and to maintain that key bond that can strengthen families. The goal is to recreate this play space as an all-inclusive, accessible playground with modern play equipment that can foster a child's gross motor skills development while also allowing kids of all abilities to play outdoors. The number of supervised visits continues to grow mainly because of the opiate epidemic-- more and more children are entering LCCS care and custody. There is limited space to hold these supervised visits. A new playground area can provide flexible space for multiple visits to be held at the same time, or even structured programming where parents and children can interact and learn together outdoors!
The overall fundraising goal is $200,000. While grants, foundation funding, and corporate contributions are being sought, donations from individuals and community groups will bring the project that much closer to reality in 2020.
