BreakAway 2018 is my 28th and last spring break service trip with 15 students joining me to travel to New Orleans to serve marginalized and low income families still waiting to recover their storm damaged homes. My last but not The Last by any means!

Today starts the kickoff to our annual Brett Martin scholarship for our BreakAway 2018 Service trip to help low income families get their homes back after storm devastation. We have 9 of our 15 BreakAway 2018 students who dearly want to go spend their spring breaks in service and yet are, themselves, from low income situations... like Brett himself was.
Brett was a dearly loved Campus Ministry student who passed away in 2004 due to complications with his epilepsy leaving a legacy of volunteerism and kindness. Starting in 2004 a scholarship fund was established in Brett’s name from donations from Brett’s family and friends.
The Brett Martin Scholarsh ip is focused to enable those students who want to spend their spring break serving others on a BreakAway trip but who are financially unable to pay the full contribution trip participants are asked to chip in. This fund is replenished every year between Christmas and New Years through a Facebook Fundrazr by Campus Ministry alumni, members of Community UCC and family and friends.
This year we have a record number of students (9) who will only be able to participant in our 2018 service trip due to the Brett Martin Scholarship. Each one of these students, like our Brett, has shown their heart for helping others and also would be unable to afford the trip’s full participant contribution of $550.
Anyone visiting my office at CUCC will find an angel still hanging over the door entering my office, where Brett spent so many rich hours in his young life, given to the Campus ministry by his mother in memory of her beloved son.

Please help us reach our goal of $4,000 so not only can today's campus ministry students reach out and put their "compassion into action" through working on homes of families who lost so much due to the violence of storms, but also so that tomorrow's BreakAway trips can keep going strong!
