Forgotten Felines of Maine hasn't added a story.
Today I was called to rescue a cat. I drove down a dirt lane to the only house around. I knocked on the door...no answer. The door wasn't shut all the way so I pushed it open and yelled in. From behind a heavy blanket hanging in the doorway came a hello. I told the voice who I was and that I was looking to help a cat. The curtain flew back and the woman burst into tears saying she had been praying and praying to God to send an angel to help Smokey.
This lady and her family moved there three years ago and the cat was already there. They have cats of their own and were afraid to bring him in for fear of giving a disease to their cats. So they fed him and loved him and made a bed from straw for him in their shed. He was a happy boy. About a year ago he either got hit by a car or attacked by a wild animal because he was dragging his leg and his bones were protruding at the shoulder. It was then they started calling for help. The local shelter never returned their numerous calls and the ACO just wanted to euthanize the cat and they said no. So they used peroxide and cleaned him up and nursed him best they could. And they continued to feed him 2-3 cans of food a day.
So today when I showed up they were overwhelmed with emotion. They love him and don't want to lose him. I though about my own upbringing and how my family cared for every stray animal around to the best of our ability but we could never have afforded to take them to the vet.
I told them I would help him and I would bring him back to them. The lady asked if we could please neuter him too. I told her we will be also giving him his shots and testing him for aids and leukemia. Again she burst into tears and said OMG then we can keep him in the house. Their cats are all indoor cats.
I drove away from that house today with a heart full of love for those people and yet knowing people would sit in judgment and say he shouldn't go back there. And to them I say why not? The love in that house is so real!
I have done this work a long time and I know for me to be the best I can be I need to care about not only the cats but the humans too...God would want it that way. Please help us help Smokey...he has lived in pain far too long. He deserves a chance to have a normal life full of love. <3
