We're on a mission to save the endangered Snow Leopard by securing a safe future for them and helping the people with whom they co-exist in the Kumaon Himalaya of Northern India.

The numbers of Snow Leopards are in serious decline, mainly because they come into conflict with humans and they are hunted for their beautiful coats and for body parts that are used in traditional medicine.

Snow Leopards sometimes kill livestock to survive because their traditional wild prey has almost disappeared as a result of humans and livestock encroaching and overgrazing wild areas. Shepherds can loose many goats and sheep overnight and then occasionally resort to retribution killings of these amazing felines.

In September 2016 a team of A4C fundraisers will trek into the high passes of the Kumaon Himalaya to meet first-hand with shepherd communities, conservationists and scientists. The funds they raise will be used to implement a community conservation project that will benefit both snow leopards and shepherd communities.

Funds raised will be used to:

1. Establish a community livestock compensation fund so that herders can be reimbursed for losses due to Snow Leopards

2. Purchase camera traps to establish numbers and distribution of Snow Leopards in the communal territory.

3. Train local herders to service camera traps and record data and to raise awareness in their community

4. Help reintroduce traditional sheep breeds and yaks, which are less prone to predation by snow leopards.

5. Reintroduce the traditional sheep dog breed, the Tibetan Mastiff, which was almost wiped out by a distemper epidemic. Tibetan Mastiffs are able to protect livestock from snow leopards.
