ONCA TEAM hasn't added a story.
ONCA is a wildlife rescue center located in the Bolivian Amazon. We rescue animals who fall victim to illegal trafficking.
Our goal is to rehabilitate them, to give them a new life, the gift of being able to enjoy like they were never taken from their families and habitat.
Being able to release back to the wild is a colossal task, that is not widely accepted in the scientific community, as it needs too much effort to be accomplished, and with a statistically low level of success.
We at ONCA believe that we can carry out this goal, especially with the monkeys, as they are social animals and therefore the learning capabilities they have are our best ally.
To achieve this we spend many years working on the creation of a group, checking that their social skills are being refined to the point that the monkeys behave with each other in the same way they do in the wild. This is no easy task as you need specialists that can research to reflect in a study the results of these interactions.
There is plenty to do in the rehab, we could be writing for weeks... so we will go to the main points where we need your help so desperately in this campaign!
Our aim is to rehabilitate the wildlife that comes to the center, to give them a new life, the gift of being able to enjoy as never before what was taken from their families and habitat.
Being able to return them to nature requires a great deal of work. At ONCA we believe that we can achieve this goal, especially with primates, as they are social animals and therefore, a good rehabilitation can mean the success of their return to the wild, their true home.
To achieve this, we spend many years working on the creation of a group, checking that their social skills are honed to the point where the primates behave with each other in the same way as they do in the wild. This is not an easy task, as it needs specialists who can do the research to reflect the results of these interactions in a study.
Where do we stand in all this work?
On the one hand, a forest biomass count is already underway within the ONCA Wildlife Custody Center. This study is an essential step to determine whether an area has sufficient natural resources for a group of rehabilitated primates to survive. So far, the results are very favorable!
On the other hand, different individuals are being tracked using GPS collars. This allows us to know what their ideal environment is, according to their own choice of environment, and to know their needs.
At the same time, an exhaustive evaluation of the health, behavior and welfare of these animals is being carried out.
With all this, another step that remains to be taken is to obtain concrete data on the fauna living in these study areas. To do this, we will carry out a mammal population count in the selected areas. The method we want to apply will be the random encounter model (REM), which consists of placing photo-trapping cameras over the study area, in order to find out the population densities of the different species that inhabit the area.
We currently have the human factor, but not the economic one. To be able to carry out our work, a minimum of 10 photo-trapping cameras would be necessary, which would involve a high economic cost, and to ensure that the health of these animals is good and that they do not transmit any parasites or diseases to other wild animals, we need to renew the center's microscope, which has become obsolete for current needs, and an ultrasound scanner to carry out rapid, non-invasive scans and make a good diagnosis/evaluation of the extent of possible lesions and the location of these lesions.
Budget:
X10 Browning Strike Force Max Plus 24MP cameras, 1600 Euros
X1 microscope
X1 ultrasound scanner
Objectives of the crowdfunding campaign
1. To obtain funding to be able to carry out the necessary studies.
2. To make people aware of the knowledge and respect for the environment.
3. To know what requirements (environmental and biological) we have to fulfil to ensure the correct development of a group of recovered and rehabilitated animals.
Previous experience and the team:
The ONCA team is made up of a group of people in the permanent commission of the project, and a large group of volunteers who collaborate in various ways.
There is a lot to do in the rehabilitation of these victims of illegal trafficking, and we need your help within the project! Conservation work in general terms is so important for the future of all species on Earth that conducting research is a key part of achieving this.
