Since 2011, TransFamily of NWPA has provided a safe space for all gender-variant people and their family and friends to share their experiences, their struggles, and their successes. We provide peer-to-peer support groups throughout Northwest PA, referrals to help people obtain the services they require (medical, legal, mental health), education to the region about the transgender community, and advocacy in areas of access to services and issues of discrimination.
TransFamily is a totally volunteer, charitable organization. We rely only on the generosity of our members and the community for financial resources.
Since we are a grassroots organization, our ability to accomlish our goals has been restricted by our lack of funds. Funding for our group would help us do the following:
- Provide financial support to our host organization, the Mental Health Association of NW PA.
- Purchase marketing materials and advertising to help us spread our message.
- Purchase materials to provide educational opportunities to the community (computer, flip charts, printed materials, etc)
- Obtain legal assistance to pursue 501c3 non-profit status.
- Provide financial support to economically disadvanted community members.
- Provide financial support to other LGBT organizations in the community.
The work we do is so critical to the transgender community. It is through our group that gender-variant people in the area find the support that may well save their lives, or the lives of someone they love, as well as the resources they need to move along in their journey.
The transgender community is a very marginalized segment of our society and, as such, experiences high levels of unemployment, denial of services, homelessness, suicide, and access to public accomodations that other take for granted.
Please help us help them!! Providing peer-to-peer support is free. Changing society so that groups like our are not needed at all takes financial resources. With your help, we can make the lives of so many people so much more fulfilling, and just maybe save some lives in the process.
