Wedekind Road Art Project (WRAP) is a community mural project along Wedekind Road in one of Reno’s oldest and most diverse neighborhoods. The project is led by an intergenerational group of residents along with Be the Change Project, a neighborhood-based non-profit. Funded in part by the City of Reno’s Art Belongs Here grant, WRAP includes repainting 3,100 feet of worn murals on three separate walls:
- The Community Wall, co-designed by residents including youth, older adults, and families along with three local artists selected by WRAP volunteers. Each of the three artists will design and install their own mural based on the community’s input. Starting in May and June 2023, WRAP has been engaging the community in designing and painting murals. Over 200 neighbors have participated so far by completing a Mural Design Survey, celebrating at our Art Block Party, and participating in the Mural Design Workshop. This fall artists will invite neighbors to participate in community paint days as well!
- The Wildlife Wall, designed and painted by a local muralist whose work uses nature’s imagery to connect individuals to the environment outside of the urban landscape. This mural will display the flora and fauna of the area, reminding us of the neighboring species with whom we share the land, air, and water.
- Outdoor Community Art Gallery, made up of sixty “mini murals” designed and painted by children and adults at various locations in the area, including our local senior center, neighborhood school, and our nearby Boys and Girls Club. This fall each 3 X 4 foot mini mural will be mounted to a 225’ wall on Wedekind. Mounting hardware will allow for replacing the panels with newly painted ones in the future, so that other student or community groups can participate in this rotating outdoor art gallery.
The Art Gallery will also include 20 photo murals made by a local photographer raised who grew up in the neighborhood. Her photo murals will feature current and past Black residents of our historically Black neighborhood.
