The climate justice movement is led by Black and Indigenous communities, very often from the Global South. Yet, these communities don't receive a fraction of the funding that White-led NGOs in the Global North receive. 

To take one tiny step toward recognizing that, we're raising money this evening for two powerful organizations: The Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of the Ecuadorian Amazon (known as CONFENIAE) and the Vessel Project.

The Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of the Ecuadorian Amazon (CONFENIAE) represents approximately 1,500 communities of Amazonian Kichwa, Shuar, Waorani, Sapara, Andwa, Shiwiar, Cofan, Siona, Siekopai, and Kijus nationalities. 

CONFENIAE organizes to defend the rights of Indigenous peoples and confront the social and environmental impacts of resource extraction in the Amazon. The COVID-19 pandemic left many Indigenous communities struggling to maintain their health while also dealing with the devastating impacts of extreme flooding caused by climate breakdown and oil spills in their territories.

Support for CONFENIAE helps provide immediate assistance to Indigenous communities on the frontlines of the climate crisis, and to Indigenous leaders and activists advocating for an end to fossil fuel extraction in the Amazon. 

The Vessel Project of Louisiana is a small mutual aid organization located in Southwest Louisiana that was founded in the aftermath of several climate disasters that ravaged the area. The Vessel Project supports vulnerable community members in finding safe shelter, housing, food, healthcare, and other expenses like medical and phone bills.

The Vessel Project provides 150 hot meals for low-income residents on the weekends, since other meal programs only run Monday to Friday. The group was founded on the principles of solidarity, and with the understanding that government programs often fail to meet basic needs in response to emergencies. Since its founding, the focus of the Vessel Project has shifted to case management, providing a range of support and resources including FEMA assistance, rental applications, and food distribution.
