XR Godalming was formed in March 2019 as part of the national Extinction Rebellion movement. We are a group of concerned citizens who have come together to take action to raise awareness of the climate and ecological crisis and our government's failure to tackle it. We are not a political group; our members come from a wide range of backgrounds.
Since April 2019, XR Godalming activists have been involved in a series of major “rebellions” in London involving acts of peaceful civil disobedience. This has so far resulted in over 30 arrests for which activists from our group have faced court charges, convictions and sentences. XR Godalming continues to grow and has sparked and assisted the formation of groups in neighbouring towns. As well as joining in national rebellions we campaign on local environment issues (e.g, against oil drilling and airport expansion in the region) and lobby local councils. We are currently engaged in preparations for a national rebellion in London August 23rd 2021 onwards. This takes place against a backdrop of alarming events across the world which are demonstrating the importance of action on the climate crisis, and of increasingly urgent warnings from scientists. The time to act is now.
The XR Godalming group runs largely without fund-raising, with costs covered by the members themselves. Nobody is paid, everyone is a volunteer. Some people prepared to risk arrest and a criminal record through acts of peaceful civil disobedience can’t afford the financial costs. Money raised here helps to support essential costs of engaging in non violent direct action, including:
* Printing of posters, leaflets, banners and flyers
* Equipment rental
* Administrative costs (e.g. website domain)
* Legal fees
