The Challenge
Kosovo is one of the biggest slums in Kampala. Behind the dilapidated houses are hundreds of mothers struggling to keep their children fed, warm, healthy and in school. On average, each mother has 6 children. You see, a typical life in the slums exposes children and their mothers to harmful practices including drug and substance abuse, petty theft, part time street begging, sex trade and witchcraft. The sight of children deprived of basic needs is heartbreaking. Whereas many other areas in the city are planned for and receive some form of support from city council, the slum community has been forgotten. We are children that grew up in these slums and we realize how our story has changed because we have been empowered. as 92Hands understand that sustainable change comes with financial independence. Hands out don’t change a story. Its is because of this, 2 years ago that 92Hands started the US4Women Project which seeks to train and economically empower mothers in slum communities. Women hold the key to a future free from hunger and poverty. By supporting our mothers; the women in the slums with access to basic literacy education, training them as business leaders, equipping them with skills to solve their daily challenges creatively, we are providing a practical and sustainable way to alleviating poverty and improving family welfare at household level.
Our Solution
92Hands mobilizes and supports women in slum settlements to form support groups through which they identify their challenges and strength. 92Hands works with women mentors and professional counselors to facilitate mindset change sessions. We help these women drop the victim mentality and realize they have the potential to do business, overcome abuse and become successful. 92Hands facilitates tailor made vocational and business skills training seminars for selected groups of women with a focus on models for small market driven enterprises. We also encourage women that go through our program to participate in Civic matters and local governance in their communities where they can amplify their voices on issues concerning their welfare and the welfare of the community. 30 women have so far gone through this program and will be graduating in August 2018. 15 of these have already started making products for sale and their life is set on a path of success. We have worked with these women to carry out community sensitisation projects on hygiene, child protection, sexual and gender based violence and drug abuse. These women are ready to lead change! We are watching how God is re-writing their life stories.
Long-Term Impact
Based on previous success, 92Hands has mobilized 80 women that will go through the 4 days business training and thereafter a grouped up according to business needs. Each group of 40 women will then go through a 6months vocational skills training program to equip them with practical skills that they will translate into vibrant business ideas. We are transforming communities; we are growing our pool of change agents that will break cycles of poverty and end its negative outcomes.
