We have had some pretty rough situations this year in our world. Started out in February with two babies that were dropped off in the night with strangles..pretty much shut our doors for a few months. Without adoption fees, it made keeping the rescue a float pretty tough. Then we lost our home due to the landlord not making payments, but we have not missed a beat...we took in four horses recently, unfortunately we had to put one horse to rest on site. She was too deformed from her bones shifting trying to stand and walk. Her coffin bone had gotten infected. Another of the four, his winky was the size of my calf, another full size horse, his hoofs were a mess, and the little girl is pictured above. Needless to say this has been a horrific rescue. When bringing the three back to the rescue, we immediately had our Doc come out and start their rehab period. We thought we were on our way to them becoming normal horses again. We were wrong... a few days ago, the gelding that had a swollen winky, due to an open wound that was not taken care of, he had tetanus. Never in the ten yrs that we have been saving horses have I seen tetanus. Horrible situation. Doc was called immediately after he started showing signs of something. We were not sure what was happening. He was suffering terribly, and we had to put him to rest. Yet another unexpected vet bill. The two remaining that are still fighting to have a normal life have required farrier work every two wks. The rehabbing of their hoofs is a very slow process. It took yrs and yrs for the neglect and it has only been 6 wks since the healing process started..we coordinated the vet and the farrier the day after so xrays could be taken to make sure the little girl in the picture had a chance of survival..it has been a very sad and horrific rescue. We are asking the public if they would possibly help us put monies back into our medical, feed, and hay fund. (For the first time we have a bill at our Doc's and would like to get it back to zero balance owed.) Without the help of caring supporters, we would not be able to continue helping the horses as we do. Ohana cannot do it alone.
