DJ and Nina are 2 year old Husky mixes who have lived the majority of their lives on chains. They have now been rescued and are in luxury boarding at The Kennel Care in Elgin, South Carolina thanks to the generous offer made by the facility. Usually boarding is 28 per day per dog; they offered us a non-profit rescue discount – the boarding is now $12.50 per dog per day and they still get all the perks! Their story is a rather sad one, not as dramatic as some but it could have easily ended up that way. DJ and his friend Nina were put on Craig's List for free with no vaccine history or other vet care- their photos showing two wonderful dogs chained to dog houses; with the recent upswing of dog kidnapping and free to good home dogs in our area ending up as bait dogs for dog fighting rings, our volunteers were extremely concerned about what fate would befall these two dogs. Dog4U, Inc. is a no kill volunteer run rescue group that fosters dogs until space is available at one of our no kill rescue partners in New England (the Buddy Dog Humane Society and Survivor Tails Animal Rescue). Given the recent snows affecting Massachusetts adoptions have slowed to a crawl, meaning our rescue partners do not have space currently- this has caused a severe backlog on our end here in South Carolina. We initially did not commit to rescuing Dj and Nina though our volunteers did contact the original owners requesting additional time to work on finding a foster home. The following day the owners told our volunteers that the dogs had until the end of the weekend to be removed from the property. Though we were completely out of foster home space, our volunteers picked up the dogs and took them to Spears Creek Veterinary Hospital where they had an initial check up. Both dogs were very frightened but happy to see friendly humans and were overjoyed to finally have a warm place to stay. DJ was found to have scars all over his feet and legs with fresh wounds under his neck (likely from another dog attacking him). Dj was under weight and both dogs had coccidia (rare in adult dogs unless they came from very bad conditions with no vet care), hook worms, round worms and whip worms. The vet commented that they had one of the worst cases of hook worms she had seen in some time. By a miracle, they were heartworm negative. They were transferred to The Kennel Care Luxury Boarding facility next door to the Vet Clinic to gain weight, get healthier and get some much needed TLC. We very rarely board dogs but these two couldn't be left to an unknown fate so here we are fund raising to help cover this significant expense (well worth it to save these two innocent pups). Neither dog has any concept of how to be a normal indoor dog yet but the caring staff at Kennel Care are working with them daily and they are working on socialization skills. They are having a great time in the indoor play room making new dog friends every day! As soon as a foster home becomes available they will leave boarding to start the next portion of their journey to finding forever homes. A big issue is that they can jump a four foot fence with ease and we have a very limited number of foster homes with taller fences. It will take some time to find the right foster family match for them but in the mean time they are safe and pampered. These two pups have gained weight, have been spayed and neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. They will soon be on their way north to find their forever families. Donations can be made directly to The Kennel Care by calling 803 736 4484 (be sure to mention Dj and Nina when calling) or by donating to this fundrazr. Thank you for your support! Dog4U, inc. is a volunteer run 501 c 3 no kill non-profit organization, donations are tax deductible. Our Tax ID # is 20-5311280.
