Camp Dreamcatcher, Inc. hasn't added a story.
My first experience with Camp Dreamcatcher came the summer before my final year of high school. Dreary weather plagued the week as I led a group of 7 year olds in my cabin. Amidst the rain, my group and I bounced back and forth between the swimming pool and “rec”—a vague term that basically referred to playing basketball or just hanging out in a covered open-air gymnasium. But I never heard a single camper complain about the lack of facilities, the camp food that most definitely came out of a tin can, the fact that going anywhere seemed to involve an uphill walk, or the dreary weather. Camp Dreamcatcher was, for these roughly 70 children whose lives were affected by HIV/AIDS, a week in which they could escape the pressures, social stigmas or daily hardships they faced the other 51 weeks of the year. In our time together, campers were able to just be kids in a safe environment.
Since that transformative experience 15 years ago, I have been continuously amazed as Camp Dreamcatcher has upgraded the program offerings while staying true to its central mission. What started as a one-week camp experience has expanded to free year-round programming for nearly 150 HIV/AIDS impacted youth. Programs now include the one-week camp session, weekend retreats, a holiday Adopt-a-Family program, a mentoring program, and HIV/AIDS education & community outreach. Each year, hundreds of volunteers like myself staff the camp, using their vacation days to participate in one of the most memorable weeks of the year. Despite living internationally, I make it a priority to be in Pennsylvania each August to kick off another session of Camp.
This past August, while I spent a week alongside more than 120 campers enjoying everything from fishing to yoga to music therapy sessions, I vowed I would do something big to demonstrate my support. Therefore, over the coming months, I will be training for a 50km (31 miles) trail race both to fundraise for the wonderful work Camp Dreamcatcher does and to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS. Please support me as I endeavor to cross two finish lines on January 31st next year—both the one at the end of the race and the goal I have set to raise $5,000 for Camp Dreamcatcher. You can check out the race here: http://www.thenorthfacethailand.com/TNF100/en/home.php
Donating is easy and quick – just click and you will be taken through to a page where you can choose to pay securely either with a credit card or with your Paypal account. All the money goes directly to Camp Dreamcatcher, a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, and you will receive a tax-deductible receipt for your contribution.
I know that I can do it with your support - no amount of money or word of encouragement is too small! Running 50km may be daunting , but contributing to the ongoing support of children and families impacted by HIV/AIDS will keep me moving. This is an organization incredibly close to my heart, and I hope you'll join me in making an important difference in these children's lives.
I also encourage you to learn more about Camp Dreamcatcher’s work at its website: http://campdreamcatcher.org/
Thank you for your support!!
Love, Jenn
