Help us make One Planet Development more accessible
We need £4000 to cover the cost of design, translation, printing, distribution and promotion of the much-needed bilingual report ‘Review of One Planet Development in Wales 2010 - 2021’
Why we're raising funds
The Review, published in both Cymraeg and
English, is finished and published. The One Planet
Council held a launch event on September 20th, 2022, at the Senedd
in Cardiff. But as a completely voluntary organisation with no core
funding , we have written this report on a shoestring. We have put
in our own money to make the Review as professional and credible as
possible. We now need to cover these costs and work on further
outreach to get the report onto the desks of people who ought to
read it.
Why is the Review important?
This Review will be invaluable to OPD
practitioners, potential applicants, planning officers and
planning policy-makers. We aim to make the policy simpler, more
accessible, and less of a burden to applicants and professionals
alike. The Review is a way for us to showcase the firm evidence of
success of One Planet Developments in meeting their requirements
and contributing to the national goals of Wales. It also gives us
a platform to help us work to resolve specific issues that have
caused problems for applicants and planning officers, and to make
the policy more accessible for all regardless of their personal circumstances.
Our Review makes clear the
contributions of One Planet Development in terms of :
- Tackling the climate and biodiversity crises
- Achieving "Net Zero" carbon
- Revitalising rural and Welsh-language communities
- Prioritising the well-being of future generations
- International leadership on sustainability
But there are barriers to entry
that make One Planet Development difficult for people to achieve. In
the Review report we have made recommendations for how to make the
One Planet Development policy more effective, more accessible to
potential applicants, and less burdensome for planning officers.
What if we raise more than £4000?
If we exceed the target, any further money will go towards:
- Printing of further copies of the Review to send to other Assembly Members and Planning Departments across Wales.
- We will look at putting on further events in other places to disseminate the findings of the report and invite engagement from other stakeholders such as planning committees, planning strategy and policy officers, or local councils beyond Wales who would like to implement similar local policies.

About The One Planet Council
The One Planet Council has produced a
comprehensive 64-page review of the progress of OPDs in Wales over
the past twelve years. Our Review is based on evidence from a survey
of 38 OPD sites (95% response rate). It also includes evidence from
past and current planning applications.
We are an independent team of volunteers working
to promote and support One Planet Development in Wales and beyond.
Our aim is to enable a broad range of exemplar One Planet
Development projects throughout Wales, comprised of people from all
walks of life.
Without any grant support or public funding the One
Planet Council has made considerable progress since forming in 2013:
- Organised and delivered expert led OPD Training to local authority and independent planning officers, other professionals, and potential applicants.
- Published a series of Position Statements to clarify policy and practical recommendations.
- Created and organise an Annual Open Week for members of the public to visit and take a tour of participating OPDs.
- Created and launched an OPD Produce Label to help practitioners with marketing produce and crafts.
- Created the website: www.oneplanetcouncil.org.uk and also a well moderated Facebook page with over 10,000 members.
- Run regular Open Meetings for the general public in different parts of Wales.
- Researched and published this report, Review of One Planet Development in Wales 2010-2021.
