Who Are We?
Ghost lights have stood vigil over unoccupied theatres for years, protecting the stage in darkness and illuminating the space for creative spirits to play in the void. Our mission is to sustain this vigil in the virtual world; providing a beacon for theatre artists to gather together and collaborate through mentorship, conversation and collective creation.
GhostLight is a digital headquarters for theatre training, mentorship, and connection. Born of the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent closing of theatre venues, GhostLight was created to provide a gathering point for the artistic community to illuminate, collaborate, and create.
What Have We Accomplished So Far?
Since our inaugural session in the Spring of 2020, GhostLight has been offering free and “Pay What You Can” online theatre classes for our artistic community. To date, GhostLight has :
- offered 19 classes led by industry-leading theatre artists
- provided training to 300 students ranging from ages 9 to 74
- live streamed 11 broadcasts to an audience of over 9.3K viewers
We have also created a successful Teaching Assistant program wherein recent theatre graduates are given the opportunity to foster transformative artistic relationships with some of Canada’s leading theatre artists.
We have been overwhelmed by the enthusiasm with which GhostLight has been received, from artists who volunteer to teach their craft, to folks who have kindly offered their time and skills to manage, promote, and run this organization. Without their valuable support GhostLight would not have been able to meet the demands of our rapidly growing community. Having accomplished all of this in the span of eight months with a volunteer-based team, we look forward to imagining what we can accomplish together with your support!
What Is Our Goal?
We have set a fundraising goal of $5,000 to keep our projects at GhostLight sustainable.These funds will be used to incorporate as a not-for- profit entity, significantly enhancing our business capabilities through enabling us to obtain charitable status. As a not-for-profit company, GhostLight will be able to expand and optimize the positive impact we make on our community.These funds will also be used to pay our teachers so that we can continue to offer free classes and provide income for artists during this challenging time.
