The Challenge
Kosovo is one of the biggest slums in Kampala. Behind the dilapidated houses are hundreds of mothers struggling to keep their children fed, warm, healthy and in school. These are victims of rape, domestic violence, early and forced marriages, drug and substance abuse, petty theft, part-time street begging, sex trade, and witchcraft. The sight of children deprived of basic needs is heartbreaking. As 92Hands we understand that sustainable change comes with financial independence. Hands out don’t change a story. As 92 hands we came up with a program called US4Women Project, a program that aims at empowering Ugandan women to rise above poverty, we are able to do this through equipping them with entrepreneurial skills like crafts, making counter books, liquid soap, beads, and necklaces, sewing door mat, Tailoring among others. the only challenge we have encountered with the tailoring class is that we have only one sewing machine for over twenty women and they take turns to use it which doesn't favor effective learning. if only we could be in a position to attain twenty sewing machines their lives would be better.
Our Solution
92Hands mobilizes and supports women in slum settlements to form support groups through which they identify their challenges and strength. 92Hands works with women mentors and professional counselors to facilitate mindset change sessions. We help these women drop the victim mentality and realize they have the potential to do business, overcome abuse and become successful. 92Hands facilitates tailor-made vocational and business skills training seminars for selected groups of women with a focus on models for small market-driven enterprises. over 50 women have gone through this program and graduated in August 2018. 25 of these have already started making products for sale and their life is set on a path of success. We have worked with these women to carry out community sensitization projects on hygiene, child protection, sexual and gender-based violence, and drug abuse. These women are ready to lead change! We are watching how God is re-writing their life stories. we believe that we will be able to raise $4000 to buy twenty sewing machines for twenty women, each sewing machine is costing $200.
Long-Term Impact
Based on previous success, 92Hands has mobilized 100 women that will go through the 4 days business training and thereafter a grouped up according to business needs. Each group of 40 women will then go through a 6months vocational skills training program to equip them with practical skills that they will translate into vibrant business ideas. We are transforming communities; we are growing our pool of change agents that will break cycles of poverty and end its negative outcomes.
To achieve this, we are seeking to raise $4000. $200 will buy a sewing machine for a woman to attend this great program. Join our movement of change-makers. Given the opportunity, families will thrive!!
