Newton Police Association hasn't added a story.
In November of 2015 the Newton City Council voted to allocate funding and approved the Newton Police Department's K-9 program for implementation in the spring of 2016.
With the approval, private donations in the amount of $5,000 are required to move forward with the project and before seizure money could be accessed to complete the program. In order to meet that goal, the Newton Police Department has established this FundRazr campaign.
The Need
The majority of the program's cost will come from the fully outfitted and specialized vehicle for the unit, the purchase of the dog itself and training for the handler. The Newton City Council has already approved funding for the vehicle, we just need help covering the cost of the dog, training and ancillary equipment.
Money will also go toward the dog’s ongoing care; including food, veterinary costs and kenneling equipment.
Long term obligations such as food and ongoing animal care will draw on the financial resources of the program into the future beyond the initial investment.
The Dog
The Newton Police Department is partnering with Midwest K9 for the purchase and training of the new dog. Midwest K9 partners with the Animal Rescue League of Iowa and repurposes rescue dogs for police work.
The new dog will be dual trained in narcotics detection and trailing. Narcotics detection will be the dog's primary duty and will assist in searching vehicles, houses, businesses and schools in conjunction with a narcotics investigation. The dog will also be trained to follow human scent and will be utilized in finding missing children, Alzheimer’s patients and criminals who have escaped police custody or ran from a crime scene. The new dog will not be an apprehension dog, meaning it's not trained to bite.
The Newton Police Department is currently assessing Smokey (pictured) a 9-12 month old Border Collie mix who is actively training in narcotics detection and trailing. Smokey was picked up by the Animal Rescue League of Iowa in September as a stray and so far has shown a lot of natural ability and he loves to work.
The Timeline
The Newton Police Department hopes to have the program fully operational by May of 2016
The Goal
The department's goal is $8000 in order to complete the purchase and training of the K9 as well as provide enough funding to cover additional startup costs and ongoing care and maintenance.
The Newton Police Department is excited for this new resource and the ability to take our narcotics investigation to a new level. We appreciate your support and look forward to introducing our new 4 legged officer to the community!!
