Opal just came out of surgery for what the veterinarian called "the worst oviduct impaction [she had] ever seen."  The doctors removed almost 1/5 of her body weight in rotting eggs from her oviduct.

The reason for this is simple: The egg industry bred her to lay such an obscene number of eggs that her oviduct broke down. Her body continued to produce eggs but she could not pass them out of her body, so they piled up inside her and rotted.

While Opal is making a great recovery, she can never lay another egg again or she will die. In chickens, there is only one way to do this: with a hormonal implant designed to shut down their ovaries.

Opal is the third hen in the past month to have received this life-saving surgery. While she is lucky to have survived, her $1100 surgery, coupled with the surgery bills from Pinky and Lotus, means that there is virtually no money left to pay for Lotus' $300 implant.
