Forgotten Felines of Maine hasn't added a story.
Meet Perseus. Perseus is feral...he is afraid of humans and does not allow us to touch him. He lived in our barn (until now) and we are his caregivers. Perseus has a pretty easy life. But life wasn't always that easy for Perseus.
Before FFoM saved him, Perseus lived on the streets. He scrounged for food and as an unneutered male he fought with other males constantly. Life was hard. One day a human didn't want Perseus eating out of his trash so he shot him. Thank God the human was a bad shot because Perseus was barely injured. But it prompted neighbors to care and one of them called us. (No one ever knows who shot him). After trapping him, Perseus was treated by a vet and neutered...then sent to live in the barn for the rest of his life...that was 4 years ago.
We love Perseus. He is always nearby and will intently stare at us as we scoop litter boxes and refill food and water bowls. We talk to him but all he does in listen and stare. Two weeks ago we noticed Perseus was not in his usual spot and after searching we found him hiding in the back room that was insulated and filled with straw and shelters. We could tell he was in pain. We netted him and got him to the vet.
Perseus had two serious Hematomas...one in each ear. He underwent immediate surgery and came home two days later feeling much better but on antibiotics. For one week we kept him in a cage and administered his antibiotics to him via food. On his follow up visit he had to have another minor surgery.
As of yesterday his meds are done and he no longer needs to live in the cage. But Perseus is no longer living in the barn either. He is in the house where his life will be easier. Perseus is an old man and he deserves a happy life....filled with warmth, canned food, a sunny window and love...from a distance that is.
Perseus' surgeries cost us just shy of $1,100. This is a whole lot of money for us. It's money we don't plan on spending but what were we to do...nothing? Not in our nature to do nothing. When we took him into our care we made a commitment to him and we promise to uphold that commitment. But $1,100 is money we don't have. This kind of care straps us and with spring around the corner we need funds for TNR. Kittens are already in the colonies. Perseus' surgeries won't stop us from helping but if you believe we did the right thing and if you believe in one feral cat then please help. No amount is too small. Thank you and God bless.
