Celebrating 50 Years by Giving Back
For my 50th birthday, I’m choosing to celebrate in a way that reflects what has mattered most throughout my life: serving others. Instead of gifts for me, I’m inviting you to help support the Haitian Center of Evansville, the only organization in our community dedicated specifically to serving Haitian individuals and families.
Many years ago, I had the privilege of teaching in Haiti. It was one of the most transformative experiences of my life. I witnessed incredible resilience, unwavering faith, and a deep sense of community that continues to shape who I am today. I still stay connected with the interpreters who welcomed me into their country and helped me build relationships that have lasted for years. As an educator, I’ve also had the honor of teaching Haitian students whose determination and brilliance have left a lasting impact on me.
Those experiences are why this cause is so personal.
The Haitian Center of Evansville is a lifeline for many families. Whether it’s helping someone navigate a new language, connect with community resources, access educational opportunities, or simply feel seen and welcomed, the Center is there. It provides more than services. It provides hope, dignity, belonging, and opportunity.
As I reflect on the last 50 years, I’ve realized the greatest gifts are the ones we give away. Every donation, no matter the amount, helps strengthen this important work and invests in the future of our Haitian neighbors.
