We seek to improve living standards of the locals by practicing alternative fishing (Fish cage farming) for sustainable development and increase food security. We need your support to help us Install 2 Fish cages in the Lake to accommodate 18000 pieces of Tillapia Fish.
We are a community based organization in Rusinga Island in Kenya. The project idea was born in a group of youths from the island who wanted to have a platform for sharing ideas and innovations. The members use the platform to create and present alternative ways of dealing with challenges young people face in Rusinga Island.
The project is a registered organization with the Kenya government. Being registered with the government of Kenya allows us to host different activities within the island, in service and for the benefit of our community.
These are our focus points:
- Training youths and kids on talent in acrobatics
- Fish farming project
- Environmental conservation activities
- Youth empowerment programs
- Women empowerment
- Boy/Girl child education
- Nonviolent communication trainings
Currently, we have 298 children that are currently in our talent program (acrobatic project and other talents program) and we want to engage them by supporting them through school based feeding program. Through our fish and horticulture farming, we want to raise food that is nutrition in value and also to deal with malnutrition which is rampant within the area.
Currently we have installed a 4 fish pond and we have done one harvest. With the challenges we are fishing with fishpond, we have realized that Fish Cage if installed in the lake (free water) we shall increase our harvest and expand the project to produce more fish so that we can take care of our beneficiaries.
The Impact:
Through this Fish Cage Farming, we shall be able to;
- Feed 298 children through school based feeding program
- Get enough profits to sponsor these children through their local education
- Expand other developments in our community like building a low cost housing to widows.
- Enroll more children in our Talent program.
- Create more business opportunities and create employment to our poor community.
Your Contribution:
Currently we have a deficit of Euro 4500 as a subsidy to help us install 2 Fish Cages. In the cage we shall stock a total of 18000 tilapia fish. Your contribution shall be used to;-
- Buy materials and equipment for building the cage
- Buy feeds to sustain the fish till a harvest
- Buy fingerlings
- Building a small wooden boat to be used for helping in feeding the fish
