Currently we, the Executive Board, of the Norman Jordan African American Arts & Heritage Academy made the decision to temporarily postpone the annual arts and heritage academy during the summer of 2019.  The reason for this suspension is that presently it is not cost efficient for us to embark on this endeavor before we address some major financial deficits.  Fortunately, we have managed each year to fundraise enough to pay our immediate bills for operating the academy.  But, for the past 5-6 years, the cost of our current location for housing and feeding our teenage students has risen beyond our ability to complete our summer sessions without having an outstanding balance to pay off.  To continue in this manner would not be good business.  Therefore, our plan is to apply concerted efforts this year (2019) toward paying off that debt, as well as finding a more affordable venue for housing and feeding students so that we can resume operating the summer arts academy in 2020 under a more stable financial situation.

The African American Arts and Heritage Academy (AAAHA) offers students 13 to 18 years of age one week of concentrated study each year in the discipline of their choice at the West Virginia University campus in Morgantown. Classes focus on history/culture, literature/creative writing, dance, museum studies, audio/video technology, vocal and instrumental music, theater arts and visual arts.

In addition, students also are treated to field trips including African American historical and cultural sites in Morgantown and Pittsburgh. Approximately 40 – 50 students attend the Academy each year. At the end of the week, the students perform in a showcase for faculty and invited guests.
