The Norman Jordan African American Arts & Heritage Academy (NJAAA&HA) offers students 13-18 years of age one week of concentrated study in the artistic discipline of their choice.  Workshops focus on vocal music, instrumental music (strings, horns, percussion including steel drums), theater, dance, creative writing (including hip-hop and basic song writing), visual arts, and arts technology.  Classes are supplemented by historical and cultural knowledge associated with student’s chosen art form.  This year’s academy will take place July 5-11, 2020 at West Virginia State University in Institute, West Virginia

In the Spring of 2019, the Executive Board of the academy made the decision to postpone the 2019 summer academy in order to restructure its agenda and address a financial obligation.  Specific actions have been taken to do just that.  Through certain fundraising activities as well as consistent donations from dedicated sponsors we have been able to significantly reduce the financial obligation and feel comfortable moving forward and resuming the summer arts and heritage academy in 2020.  Our fundraising objective for the next five months is to totally obliterate the financial deficit as we relocate to a more pragmatic venue setting.

How do we do this?   With your help, the Arts & Heritage Academy will be able to continue its outstanding work with the teenage youth of our society.  For more than 30 years, the academy has helped to identify and develop the artistic talents and interests of teenagers as well as introduce them to associated historical and cultural knowledge via classes, workshops, demonstrations, exposure to and interaction with guest artists, and travel to relevant field trips.  The excellent training of our instructors coupled with the other above mentioned enhancements has had a significant impact on student’s artistic development as well as their self-identity, confidence, and self-esteem.   Many students began attending at age 13 and have continued throughout their teenage years.  The Norman Jordan African American Arts & Heritage Academy’s greatest desire is to continue that legacy for our valued and precious youth as they prepare themselves to become outstanding adults.

How can I help?  It costs approximately $19,000.00 to fund the one week 2020 academy.  To become financially solvent we still need to raise $9,000.00, making our total need $28,000.00.  Please continue to be, or become one of the Academy’s financial supporters by making a donation during this five month fundraising period.  The academy is a 501c3 organization, which makes your donation tax deductible.
