Concordia Co-op hasn't added a story.
Prior to living at Concordia, Britt had been experiencing houselessness on and off for 17 years. She is a Native Arapaho Two Spirit Elder who engages in around-the-clock, invaluable mutual aid and organizing work especially for the unhoused community in Austin. Last year, we raised enough funds for her to live with us at Concordia Co-op, and she has been a radiant light in our community since!
Now a full year has passed, and we urgently need solidarity and support once again for her to continue living at Concordia as well as having enough for living expenses and co-op dues.
Britt not only works incredibly hard to meet some of the basic needs of those around her, but also brings joy, light, resourcefulness, and vision to most every interaction she has. She works relentlessly to provide food, water, supplies, and information to unhoused folks as well as low-income families. She is a keystone of mutual aid organizing in Austin, and sometimes does not get the full appreciation or material compensation that she deserves.
The funds we are raising, like last year, will go to her rent for the whole year, her dues for the co-op, and living expenses. If you are involved in mutual aid efforts in Austin, odds are you have benefited from Britt’s work in some way, so please make extra sure to contribute and share!
Last year we shared this personal challenge from Concordia Co-op, and would like to repeat it again this year (though any contribution is appreciated, no matter how small):
If you are a white person / settler living in a housing co-op, consider donating $50 or more! (Many housing co-ops perpetuate whiteness, subcultures, and financial inaccessibility rather than building transformative mixed income, anti-racist, and intergenerational communities.)
If you are white and/or a settler, have stable housing, and have never before moved a significant amount of money to Native organizations, communities, or individuals; now is the time to start --> Consider donating $100 or more! (Your wealth and therefore access to stable housing was likely secured or aided through centuries of colonialism, theft, and exploitation.)
If you are supported by generational wealth (e.g. a large inheritance or a trust fund) or make a high income - give $500 or more!
Last year, the community really came through to support stable housing and other needs for Britt. We raised the amount we needed for her in just a few days. We're asking for your help again - by sharing, donating what you can, hitting up people with wealth, and even sharing fundraising ideas with us if you have them. Thank you!
