Iowa City Catholic Worker hasn't added a story.
Our love for God and neighbor is greater than the federal
government's lack of planning.
The Catholic Worker House has created a a COVID19 Mutual Aid
plan to organize on-going material support for immigrant, refugee,
homeless, very poor, disabled, and unemployed workers in Iowa City who
may be negatively impacted by a potential pandemic.
This plan includes delivering food and supplies to shut-in
families, other forms of mental/emotional support, an online
organizing strategy, and the maintenance of all essential and
emergency services provided by or delivered at our house of
hospitality during this crisis period.
We act alongside global movements to show the nation and the
world that our communities take care of each other - from Iowa's
culture of neighborliness to a radical christian culture of Loving Thy
Neighbor. We reject the ideology and idolatry of Greed to guide our
actions. All we need are Christ's healing love and compassion for one
another - and maybe a little righteous anger!
We act in solidarity, social justice, AND charity. We know that
homeless and undocumented communities will be one of the most
vulnerable groups with the least government support.
In the absence of larger structural changes, our efforts will
not be nearly enough to mitigate the effects of an outbreak here
locally. That is why in addition to social services, we also support
workplace, neighborhood, tenant, and community organizing efforts to
win paid time off, expanded unemployment and food stamp benefits,
emergency Medicaid for all who need it, the opening of neighborhood
testing centers and aid distribution centers, and a moratorium on
deportations, evictions, foreclosures, sweeps, and new jail bookings.
The direct, mutual aid caring work involved in these efforts
requires material resources; and ideally those should be provided by
the big corporations, insurance companies, real-estate developers, war
profiteers, and politicians from both political parties who have made
Iowa and the country prone to such a crisis through decades of
neoliberal deregulation, privatization, and 1% tax cuts.
In the absence of action by the oligarchy, the billionaire
class, and the federal government, it will be up to us to fill the
gaps: the multi-racial working-class and grassroots, everyday Iowans,
working together in the spirit of solidarity, and through our own
democratically-controlled organizations, labor unions, and intentional communities.
Please join us and give generously today. God bless you!
The Iowa City Catholic Worker is an intentional, faith-based
community of everyday people in Iowa City and Johnson County. This
project is a result of a love for community, God, and country. We
are a collection of volunteers with a community land trust and a
house of hospitality, not an incorporated nonprofit. That means no
overhead, no administrative fees, no salaries, no wages, and no
stipends. Every dollar you donate will go directly towards
groceries, supplies, and material aid during this period of
uncertainty and hardship.
