We are the Community Democracy Project! We're an all-volunteer campaign.  We work to turn the power structure right-side up by putting the people of Oakland in charge of the city budget. We are a group of teachers, service workers, union members, cooperative worker-owners, parents, and fighters for a more just and equitable Oakland.

Together we can decide how much money goes to potholes, housing, parks, and libraries. Our ballot initiative creates more than 100 neighborhood assemblies across Oakland. Every month people will meet to discuss community issues and determine public priorities. Then once a year, we'll vote on how much money should go to each city department.

As you may know, CDP’s participatory budgeting initiative was juuuuuust shy of making it on the 2020 ballot. But after gathering more than 40,000 signatures, our team has grown bigger and stronger! And we're fired up to go again but we need your help!

When the pandemic hit, we spent hours figuring out how to organize for a
People’s Budget when we can’t gather signatures safely! One idea was to
continue creating a leaderful base of supporters so that once our initiative
passes, we’ll have folks ready and willing to facilitate neighborhood

So we launched our School4Organizing (S4O). Our first S4O cohort hosted 3 facilitation workshops and trained 25 attendees reppin neighborhoods in Oakland, and Oregon, and Florida! We also formed the Ballot Dreams Working Group to figure out ways to overcome barriers for all-volunteer campaigns like ours to get on the ballot especially in the time of corona.

We're in a unique situation where millions of people will soon get or have already gotten $600 that they weren't expecting to receive. In this time of crisis, there is now a movement to redistribute stimulus checks as a demonstration of mutual support and solidarity.

As our friends at the East Bay Permanent Real Estate Cooperative have put it, "[t]he steps we take now will lay the foundation for what comes next. We need to imagine different ways of doing business that work for the community!"

The Sustainable Economies Law Center created a series of gifs to illustrate why we need to stimulate the solidarity economy and they suggested that folks pledge their check to organizations like ours who are focused on transforming the economy!

We’re hoping for individual donations of $100-$600!

If you donate to this fundrazr campaign, your money will go toward our next signature gathering campaign. We're not sure when that will be because COVID19 makes it unsafe to gather signatures in person but we want to be prepared for when we can launch!
