We are a non-profit organization that has provided low or no-cost care to over 8,000 needy animals just last year! We currently spay/neuter around 200 to 250 cats each week, and have come across many sick and injured stray and feral cats who would have died without our help. Flash, pictured above, was found dragging himself across a street, with two broken legs. Thankfully, one of our community partners found him and brought him to us. After our doctor examined him and he was x-rayed, we found the cause of his injuries - a single gunshot had broken both legs and the bullet was still lodged in his forearm. We were determined to help Flash. We had to get at least one of the legs back to function. Surgery was performed to repair his hind leg first. We hoped that the repair would hold since the fractures were open and exposed to bacteria. After he recovered for over a week from that surgery, a second, more difficult surgery was performed to repair the front leg. This required a plate and screws. Unfortunately, the repair (where the bullet was originally lodged) became infected. We were devastated, but tried a different antibiotic. Miraculously, both of the legs healed and Flash found a family that will keep him safe and sound!
In order to care for cats and other animals around the Western Pennsylvania region, we have built up the organization with a stationary clinic that is fully equipped with a surgical suite, digital x-ray machine, in house blood machines, and, most importantly, an awesome team of people dedicated to helping all of these injured, sick, and homeless animals! In addition to the stationary clinic, we have a mobile surgery unit that is in action two to three times per week, bringing veterinary care to animals in underserved communities. We have traveled over 30,000 miles over the past few years and have worked with many wonderful rescue organizations to spay and neuter stray, feral, and pet cats that contribute to overpopulation, overcrowding, and euthanasia in shelters. We have also done many targeted Trap-Neuter-Return events, sterilizing and vaccinating colonies of 50 or more cats in a single day!
Currently we are expanding our space so that we can help even more animals. We have acquired a secondary facility, just two blocks from our clinic, and are actively working to make a home for the sick and injured cats where they can recover until they find their very own family, just like Flash. We would also like this space prepared for abused animals that are rescued by our new Humane Officer. So far, we have removed the old carpeting and installed easy to clean and sanitize tile floors. Currently, we are painting the walls and preparing individual rooms for group housed cats. We need to complete the construction with will include outdoor cat enclosures and a new garage to house the mobile unit to keep in in tip top condition. Not only can the garage protect our equipment, it can be used as an emergency shelter for large intakes from hoarding situations. We will also fit the unfinished basement with kennels for temporary housing of dogs.
