Hello everyone!

FUDEBIOL, the Costa Rican environmental protection nonprofit, needs your support! Our mission is to protect Costa Rica's natural land, resources, and animals in order to preserve the environment for all. In 2020, a FUDEBIOL volunteer named Bella launched Tree by Tree, a crowdfunding campaign to fund FUDEBIOL's expansion of protected land, natural resources, and native plants and animals. 

FUDEBIOL's main mission is to protect and preserve Costa Rica's natural lands while increasing the sustainability of the environment. Their current goal is to expand the amount of land they can protect. They currently protect 75 hectares of land, and their long term goal is to protect a total of 500 hectares. With the money raised by this campaign, we will be able to help them acquire 10 more hectares and preserve another 4,000 trees! Each hectare of land costs $17,500. While that may seem like a lot, each meter of land is sold for just $1.75, and a donation of $45 will provide FUDEBIOL with the funds to acquire the necessary land to plant and/or protect another tree! If just 4,000 people pledge $45 to preserve a tree, we will meet and exceed our fundraising goal. 

Protecting and preserving natural land does more than just prevent it from corporate development. By planting more trees, FUDEBIOL helps to combat global warming and improve air quality. This is because trees take in carbon dioxide (CO2) and release oxygen (O2). CO2, released from the usage of fossil fuel,  builds up in the atmosphere and traps the infrared radiation from the sun when it's reflected off of the Earth's surface, causing the Earth's surface and core temperatures to rise dangerously high, as they are now. Large plots of trees, like those that FUDEBIOL creates and preserves, act as carbon dioxide banks, drawing carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. This helps diffuse the effects of global warming, as if less CO2 is present in the atmosphere, less infrared light will become trapped in it, which will prevent the rise of Earth's core temperature. A singular tree will remove an entire ton of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere over the course of its lifetime, Additionally, as trees release oxygen, they also improve the quality of the air, meaning that more trees allows for the tens of thousands of people who live in the surrounding area to breathe in cleaner, healthier air.

One of FUDEBIOL's most notable accomplishments is their participation in providing clean water to the nearby town of San Isdrio and the Pérez Zeledón region. The Quebradas Basin, in their protected land, is the sole water source for San Isdrio and the main water source for the entire Pérez Zeledón region. The first aqueduct of the region is located on their protected lands. Their protection of the land on which the basin is located has allowed 100,000 Costa Ricans (and counting!) to be provided with a reliable, sustainable source of clean water. By protecting even more land, FUDEBIOL would be able to continue to provide a stable source of water to even more people.

By protecting the natural land, plant and animal species are also protected. The protection of plants and animals does more than just prevent their extinction, it increases biodiversity in the region by increasing the amount and variations of stable species, in turn strengthening the ecosystem. This means that if one "link" in the food chain, or species, becomes weak, the other species that depend on it will still survive, as there will be other species to "fill the gap". Strong ecosystems are important not only for wildlife, but for humans as well, as a stable, thriving ecosystem allows the human population to safely coexist with nature and increase the sustainability of the environment.

With the money that you can help us raise, you will help FUDEBIOL accomplish their long term goal of acquiring more natural land to protect. With these funds, they will be able to expand the amount of land they currently protect by 10 hectares, and preserve another 4,000 trees. A singular tree, which costs roughly $45 to plant or protect, will offset an entire ton of carbon dioxide emissions. If everyone reading this contributes enough to plant a tree, not only will you each remove an entire ton of CO2 from Costa Rica's air, we will also create undeniable momentum to help FUDEBIOL reach their goal and ensure that a greater percentage of Costa Rica's natural lands are protected.

¡FUDEBIOL, la organización costariccense que trabaja para la protección del ambiente, necesita su apoyo! Nuestra misión es proteger la tierra natural, los recursos, y los animales de Costa Rica para conservar el medio ambiente para todos. En 2020, una voluntaria en FUDEBIOL, Bella, creó Arbol por Arbol, una campaña de financiación colectiva para financiar el aumento de la protección de la tierra, los recursos naturales, y las plantas y los animales nativos. 

La misión principal de FUDEBIOL es proteger y preservar las tierras naturales de Costa Rica al tiempo que aumenta la sostenibilidad del medio ambiente, y su objetivo actual es ampliar la cantidad de tierra que pueden proteger. Actualmente protegen 75 hectáreas de tierra y su objetivo a largo plazo es proteger un total de 500 hectáreas. ¡Con el dinero recaudado por esta campaña, podremos ayudarlos a adquirir 10 hectáreas más y preservar otros 4.000 árboles! Cada hectárea de tierra cuesta $ 17,500. Si bien eso puede parecer mucho, cada metro de terreno se vende por solo $ 1.75, y una donación de $ 45 proporcionará a FUDEBIOL los fondos para adquirir los 25 metros necesarios para plantar y / o proteger un árbol. Si solo 4.000 personas se comprometen a preservar un árbol, alcanzaremos y superaremos nuestro objetivo de recaudación de fondos.

Proteger y preservar la tierra natural hace más que simplemente prevenir su desarrollo corporativo. Al plantar más árboles, FUDEBIOL ayuda a combatir el calentamiento global y mejorar la calidad del aire. Esto se debe a que los árboles absorben dióxido de carbono (CO2) y liberan oxígeno (O2). El CO2, liberado por el uso de combustibles fósiles, se acumula en la atmósfera y atrapa la radiación infrarroja del sol cuando se refleja en la superficie de la Tierra, lo que hace que la superficie de la Tierra y las temperaturas centrales aumenten peligrosamente, como ahora. Grandes parcelas de árboles, como las que crea y conserva FUDEBIOL, actúan como bancos de dióxido de carbono, extrayendo dióxido de carbono de la atmósfera. Esto ayuda a difundir los efectos del calentamiento global, ya que si hay menos CO2 presente en la atmósfera, menos luz infrarroja quedará atrapada en ella, lo que evitará el aumento de la temperatura central de la Tierra. Un árbol singular eliminará una tonelada entera de dióxido de carbono de la atmósfera durante el transcurso de su vida. Además, a medida que los árboles liberan oxígeno, también mejoran la calidad del aire, lo que significa que más árboles permite que las decenas de miles de personas vive en los alrededores para respirar un aire más limpio y saludable.

Uno de los logros más notables de FUDEBIOL es su participación en el suministro de agua potable a la cercana ciudad de San Isdrio y la región de Pérez Zeledón. La Cuenca de Quebradas, en su territorio protegido, es la única fuente de agua para San Isdrio y la principal fuente de agua para toda la región de Pérez Zeledón. El primer acueducto de la región se ubica en sus terrenos protegidos. Su protección de la tierra en la que se encuentra la cuenca ha permitido que 100.000 costarricenses (¡y contando!) Cuenten con una fuente confiable y sostenible de agua limpia. Al proteger aún más tierra, FUDEBIOL podría continuar proporcionando una fuente estable de agua a más personas.

Al proteger la tierra natural, también se protegen las especies vegetales y animales. La protección de plantas y animales hace más que prevenir su extinción, aumenta la biodiversidad en la región al incrementar la cantidad y variaciones de especies estables, fortaleciendo a su vez el ecosistema. Esto significa que si un "eslabón" en la cadena alimentaria, o una especie, se debilita, las otras especies que dependen de él aún sobrevivirán, ya que habrá otras especies para "llenar el vacío". Los ecosistemas fuertes son importantes no solo para la vida silvestre, sino también para los humanos, ya que un ecosistema estable y próspero permite que la población humana coexista de manera segura con la naturaleza y aumente la sostenibilidad del medio ambiente.

Con el dinero que puede ayudarnos a recaudar, ayudará a FUDEBIOL a lograr su objetivo a largo plazo de adquirir más tierras naturales para proteger. Con estos fondos podrán ampliar en 10 hectáreas la superficie de tierra que protegen actualmente y preservar otros 4.000 árboles. Un árbol singular, que cuesta aproximadamente $ 45 para plantar o proteger, compensará una tonelada completa de emisiones de dióxido de carbono. Si todos los que leen esto contribuyen lo suficiente como para plantar un árbol, no solo eliminarán una tonelada entera de CO2 del aire de Costa Rica, sino que también crearemos un impulso innegable para ayudar a FUDEBIOL a alcanzar su objetivo y asegurar que un mayor porcentaje de las tierras naturales de Costa Rica están protegidos.
